ssmokee Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 It *might* be able to run a 1GB module (its a long story). There really would be no harm in trying, provided you make sure that where ever you buy it will let you exchange/refund it for a 512MB in case it doesnt work out.
hunglah4u Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 well, a friend of mine has a crappy m848lu (PC Chips I believe) motherboard he said I could have but I noticed the specs say it runs a 333mhz fsb. Everest has shown me I have a thourobred-A 2200 (**** it) I am sure this processor is below a 333 fsb. Will my crappy processor and crappy memory run in this crappy motherboard? Just looking for a quick fix before I can do some homework and build a complete system. Thanks for your continued help with keeping this dinosaur alive!

That just means the FSB wont go higher than 333MHz, so dont waste any money/time buying a 400MHz FSB chip. All non-barton core Athlon XP chips run at 266 FSB, and should work just fine in that motherboard. 1GB modules should work fine in it too.
hunglah4u Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Awesome, I kinda figured that since my 9800pro is an 8x card and still runs in the 4x slot I have...I thought maybe the concept would be the same. Thanks for your help ssmokee, much appreciated!
hunglah4u Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 (edited) So smokee, what's this long story about a 1g module might work?...just curious. This computer I have was originally an e-machines (although I've altered it so much that the only thing emachines about it is the motherboard) anyways, I managed to talk to an e-machines "tech" and he said even if I did manage to get a 1gig in there the motherboard wouldn't utilize it due to the fact that it was designed to only handle 512 a slot. What do you think about his statement? Is he just trained to say that? He spent the majority of the time telling me not to upgrade my board because I wouldn't be able to use my restore cd...lol. I told him I would just rip my copy of windows off of the restore cd since it was my copy anyways and he went on a rant about how I couldn't rip e-machines property. So I think maybe he was just trained to say that?P.s.-also, if I did decide to keep this motherboard and the 1gig chip doesn't work...will I see much of an improvment by going from 768mb to 1024? Thanks again! Edited August 13, 2005 by hunglah4u

All versions of the L7VMM2 use the KM266 northbridge, and I think that it might support 1GB modules. I cant say for sure though because Im getting conflicting answers on google. These is also no gaurantee that the specs ECS have on their site are 100% correct, and same goes for the e-machines tech guy said. If it isnt properly recognized, the board will likely only see 1/2 the 1GB, ie 512MB.I told him I would just rip my copy of windows off of the restore cd since it was my copy anyways and he went on a rant about how I couldn't rip e-machines property. So I think maybe he was just trained to say that?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Wouldnt worry about it because it isnt the property of e-machines. Here is a guide on how to do it; Making a Windows Installation CD from a Recovery DiskP.s.-also, if I did decide to keep this motherboard and the 1gig chip doesn't work...will I see much of an improvment by going from 768mb to 1024? Thanks again!<{POST_SNAPBACK}>I really have no idea since I dont have first hand experience with BF2 or Far Cry, but I think the higher the visual quality settings you use the more likely you are to see an increase.
hunglah4u Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Thanks for the info Ssmokee, was perplexed myself when trying to find the awnser through Google. Thanks for the reassurance with the Windows ripping situation...makes me feel better since I did it once I got don't chatting with the tech guy, lol. I figured it was my copy so why can't I use it? Anyways if I buy this chip I just wanna make sure it won't physically screw up my board. I wouldn't mind if it only used 512 of it but that tech dude was talking like I'd put a crater in it. But oh well, here's a question. I don't know how much knowledge you have with video cards but I installed my vga silencer on my 9800 pro with the included paste...I read for performance reasons I should have used something like arctic ceramique or something. I ordered a tube just to have on hand but do you think it would have any performance benefits if I re-installed the vga silencer with the Ceramique on the processor? Thanks for looking out Smokee!
ssmokee Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 If you are overclocking that 9800pro the arctic silver should help you eek out a few more MHz on the GPU vs standard white thermal grease. If you have never used arctic silver before, take close look at the application instructions for AS ceramique. One thing to note is that it will take a while for the arctic silver to set in and reach its full potential for thermal conductivity, so dont expect to see the full benefit right off the bat.
hunglah4u Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 (edited) Well, I did my best following the instructions and gave it an initial break in period of about 26 hours, (running the pc then turning it off and allowing it to return to room temprature) then I got impatient and ran ati tool. I can get a few extra mhz out of it (it's been like 70 hours now). I can only get it up to 417/388 so far. I have an arctic silencer r3 on there and I'm happy I could get it up over xt speeds with it being stable. This topic has been done to death on the web but everybody says something different...not sure if I should flash to an xt or just be happy with my little overclocker. Besides I have a powercolor 9800 pro and I can't find anybody on the web that has flashed a powercolor 9800 pro to an xt...so, I don't know. What do you think?...thanks for the guide for the Ceramique and of course all your great help Ssmokee! You are the man. P.S.-by the way it definitly has the r360 core (checked twice) Edited August 23, 2005 by hunglah4u
ssmokee Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Im glad I could be of help, but when it comes to modding/flashing video cards unfortunately I cant offer any assistance. I recommend you start another thread for that.
