ZeroHour Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 HiWe are needing to create a secure computer for usage in a exam.I was wondering if anyone had any tips/progs that may help.We have a AD network currently and would like one user (such as examuser) to boot only word (xp version) and not have access to there start menu.I was thinking about replacing explorer.exe but not sure where it is in the registry.Cheers for the ideas
aktarus Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 It is possible to do it via registryopen up regeditthen go to this key:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]Find the string called shell and modify is value to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Winword.exe or whatever ur path This way every time u boot windows, it will boot in Word instead of the default explorer.exeDon't forget to backup your registry before doing any kind of modification to it.
Gangaskan Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 should be able to do it with group polocies if you have a server setup
jpatto Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 Best way would be to use AD if you have it setup - this way you can impose many restrictions you like and remove them when necessary
Takeshi Posted May 12, 2005 Posted May 12, 2005 You can disable most things from the Start menu via GP.Or, you can specifiy an alternative shell via GP:User Config\Admin Temp\System: Custom User Interface
Aegis Posted May 12, 2005 Posted May 12, 2005 You can't just disable explorer.exe because the user would still have access to the Task Manager. You could try deleting task manager, but then you would have no way to shut down.
