Try FFDShow.

In video decoder configuration, activate subtitles.

Make sure the subtitles are in the same folder as the movie is and that they have the same name.

e.g:

Titanic.avi

Titanic.srt

Using this method subtitles aren't put in the video.

I don't think that what you are asking is possible.

I believe it is possible to mux subtitles and avi into a container.

For example .mkv

Maybe VirtualDubMod can do that.
