Error occured MSXML Patch 2.6.

1. So far i have Windows 98SE installed.

2. All my dirvers installed and updated except for my printer and USB.

3. Installed IE SP1

4. Windows Installer

5. patches up to MSXML Patch 2.6.

I have not yet installed the UWSP1 as of yet.

Now I recieved and error message which says:

"Error occured MSXML Patch 2.6. . . . either the version installed does not match the version of this hotfix or setup was unable to determine version currently installed."

This apears to be the problem . . . your links are not current.

Okay it turns out I didn't find the problem. I looked in the c:\windows\dahotfix.log and it says

"error MSMXL 2.6 is not installed on the machine." Is this missing from the Win 98SE CD? Or did it forget to load it?

Where it says Windows 98 = includes 98 SE.

Win98 SE Setup CD does not include nor install MSXML 2.6.

Only installs generic MSXML 1.0 [MSXML.DLL = that build is obsolete].

U need to install files above to have MSXML 2.6, 3.0 + 4.0, their SPs + patches.

This is the patch that I downloaded from your site and it gave me the error. That is why I downloaded the others from microsoft. I was working my way backwards from oldest to newest when I came up with that message.

Well I pulled everything off again and started from scratch. This time I did a chubby install with 98lite and pretty much followed soldiers recommendations except for adding MSOffice and adding the critical updates. I may add the critical updates but right now my computer sails right along so I think I may just stick with what I have or do the few update for IE up to 2.6. SO if I pull everything off again I think I will do the micro and see what happens . . . . not for a long time though.

The link @ my site points to newest official MS patch.

Try to send them feedback about it and include the error you got after installing this patch.

Shamgar, the reason why the MSXML Patch 2.6 does NOT work is because you do not have the full MSXML 2.6 addon installed or do not have the original msxml2.dll file stored in the Windows\System folder. MSXML 2.6 for Win9x is included in MDAC 2.6, not IE (make a note of this MDGx). IE6 and MDAC 2.7/2.8 have MSXML 3.0.

If you really want the MSXML 2.6 patches to work, download and install MDAC 2.6 SP2 here:

KB887606 - FIX: The Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) uses cached credentials incorrectly

There is no longer any mention of MSXML 2.5 in either article, although the Download details link from the original version of KB832414 still works.

NOTE : 98SE/ME are not listed under 'supported operating systems'

but the MSXML 2.5 patch appears to install OK [msxml.dll 8.0.7002.0].

Sorry for the dumb question, but does this mean one should install just KB887606 (and not both KB832414 and KB887606) for MSXML 2.6 and 4.0?

You only need KB887606 for MSXML 4.0 SP2 & MSXML 2.6 as KB832414 is now obsolete.
