i recently installed an old version of roxio goback onto my xpsp2 machine. when i rebooted goback seemed to have corrupted a system file that is used to boot the machine. when i went into dos to try and move a replacement file over it seemed to have deleted the partitions of my drive ( i was using an ntfs compatible dos ). is there any way i can restore the file system to my drives without wiping them ?

Why would you put roxio goback on an XP computer? The built in system retstore is far better and fully supported.

As far as your partitions, what NTFS compatable DOS did you use?

You should be able to boot to your XP CD and do a repair install (not recovory console) and be OK.

I believe GoBack changes the filesystem, it seems to be linux based. You can probably access the files from a boot-from-cd linux frontend (knoppix).

Just a theory not actual facts. :}

EDIT:

Just to add to my theory, the data is not actually erased, it's just in a file sytem not natively recognised by windows.

Try this:

1. grab any other HD and install any MS OS you want

2. go to http://www.data-recovery-software.net/ and download a copy of R-studio and install it.

3. Recover all the information from your NTFS partition and save it.

I think this advice might work (it happens to me all the time and R-studio never failed me)
