I pulled down a zip file of win98 stripped down to 7megs. Now I can't find the site, one similar to it, or any ref to anything like it (excluding 98lite) anybody able to point me in the right direction? Not including networked installs. This is a stand alone system I have on my AIO dvd.

This has been discussed several times.

Search and ye shall find:

However, I think these are the links you need:

http://winimize.com/7meginst.html - 98se down to 7mb

http://www.etek.chalmers.se/~e8gus/nano98/ - 98se down to 4.38mb

Another interesting link is for a 50mb 98se that runs from a LiveCD with a RAMDISK for registry and program access. Like Knoppix or **** Small Linux.

I found one site recently where someone claimed to have installed Windows 98 on a RAM DISK. It took 325 MB. They said they couldn't get Win2000 to install on a ram disk though.

It would be cool to mount a drvspace volume on a ram disk (using scandisk.exe /mount), install Windows 98, and then just copy the drvspace volume file whenever you want to backup your OS.

That is the method that you can find in the link in my post in the thread neil pointed to, more precisely these ones:

and with some variations, this one (very well done tutorial):

However, the most valid solution is this one:

FREEWARE Qualystem Rescue 1.2 Free Edition

http://www.qualystem.com/en/download.html

As it needs only a VERY small amount of RAM (only thing that goes into the RAM drive is the registry).
