Windows Refuses To Stay Shut Down

Featured Replies

I am getting really wound up with this one. I can't keep my pc shut down it will only restart. I have checked for viruses and adaware shut my services down one by one and the only thing I removed that let it shut down was the dhcp client. But obviousley when I did that I couldn't get onto the internet.

HELP!!!!

you can always turn off the computer by unplugging it :) most computers also power off if you hold down on the power key for 8 seconds.

try rebooting in Safe Mode (F8 Key), run your virus checks and spyware checks. Then shutdown.

right click my computer > properties > advanced > startup & recovery settings > uncheck "automatically restart"

A system failure somewhere has caused it, you may be able to find out what in the event viewer.

you could create a shortcut on your desktop using this.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 01

and then double click on it to see if it shuts down.

Are you using a M/Board with a SIS chipset. i have come across some boards that will not shut off if power management is enabled in the bios. turn it off and the computer should power off

Is it being woken by modem activity? If so, disable "Wake on Lan Activity" in the bios.

1) try all the above options (tried? :P ohh. then continue down )

OR

2) A how-to guide on shutdowns and reboots (no matter which OS)

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=40115

OR

3) Go to power options in the control panel, Advanced Tab, make sure u have selected the Shutdown option for the power off button.

OR

4) Try applying this reg tweak

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"PowerdownAfterShutdown"="1"

OR

5) Try the hard reboot - Press shutdown button for 8 seconds

OR

6) Reinstall Windows if all above fails

OR

:( - Contact system vendor
