Unable to change attributes.

Hi,

I am trying to change my "Program Files" file from read only to readable(write to).

I go through the steps and watch the whole file re-do the attributes,but then when I close the file and reopen it,its again in a read only state.

I want to use the sharing function and I also want to use a small bootup program but the program says it needs to have this file readable.Or I guess you could say writeable.

Any ideas.

what type of filesystem are you using? NTFS or FAT?

Sounds interesting what your doing but doesnt look like it is possible to do that you might want to look at trying something different.

NTFS is naturally read-only.. i suggest u change to FAT if you want to remove the read only

So its naturally read only.

So you cant say why it will not stay writeable?

I can't change other folders to write.

I am really not doing anything complicated.

It must be some setting with XP.

You can't change it because Program Files is used by the OS. It's like trying to change C:\Windows\

But I cant change ANY folders on my hard drive to non read-only.

I am trying to use Microsofts Bootvis program.

It tracks your bootup process.

It is written by Microsoft and it wants the "program files" folder to be writeable on bootup.

I got the program from the Microsoft site.It even XP certified.

well.. NTFS is only read only but i can't tell u why to be honest.. i had the problems like you.. so i know first hand..
