Closing windows

I am having problems lately closing windows or pages,When i click on the red x it wont close then i get a window saying the program is not responding ,when i click close that particular application it shuts everything down and returns me to the desktop.Help.Compaq computer,128 RAM,40gig harddrive PIII.

sound like explorer.exe is having problems.

can i ask when you last defragged your pc?

and how long you have been running xp for?

your ram is the minimum required for XP, it should run fine with that, i have a similar spec pc in the next room i dont use, it runs XP ok, if a little slugy and less stable.

theres a few options here to fix this, but i my guess is your pc needs defragging.

also it maybe kernel32.dll.. known issues on the previous windows and xp.. but yeah.. i'd suggest a defrag or maybe a fresh install

Or, put in the XP Disc, (bootable or boot disks) and restart..

Pretend like your setting up Windows again, and do not click the repair option on the first menu, hit setup, and repair.

The second repair, will reinstall system files only, leaving your files untouched (no real need to backup)

Other choice:

Defragging (Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter
