Content Management Software Recommendations

Recommended Posts

So I was thinking it's about time I started a website. It'll be a nice experience and a nice addition to me resume. Of course I don't want to go and reinvent the wheel so I'm looking for some recommendations for good content management software.

I've seen two that I'm interested in so far

http://www.aspapp.com/

http://plone.org/

Any Suggestions? B)

ahh.... Content Managament for your site?

Yeah, basically I'm asking; What vbBullitien is to Message Boards, _________ is to Web Sites? ;)

http://plone.org/ is an actual demonstration of this.

Will you have a webhost or will this be locally hosted on your machine?

I'm thinking of doing the initial hosting locally, whether linux or windows.

If you decide to go for a remote webhost just for a higher uptime, etc.

http://netrulon.com is a great free host from what people tell me.

If you want to pay a small fee, check out http://www.locias.com.

PHP Nuke is good for generating a site, but not secure at all. CPGNuke is awesome, and version 9 is coming soon.

I would say Mambo. Excuse me while I plug e-Max Hosting here... If you sign up for an account with them it's built into the cpanel and you can easily have it up and going in minutes.

This is what it looks like when you first install it... http://www.everythingit.org/eit/ (my website... for demo purpose)

You can find more information at www.mamboserver.com

It depends on what your site is going to be.

If its just a general site, your web-page creating app itself (Frontpage,DreamWeaver,GoLive) can manage it.

Portal? check out VirtuaNews (used by msfn as well) or Invision Portal

Blog? check out WordPress (pay) or Blog:CMS (free)

...... and a million more categories ;)

In every case, remember that it requires some effort to understand how it works. I've just seen far too many people give up saying its too difficult. If you have the desire to make your site good, you will easily learn how to use your CMS.

Do post back here on what you finally chose!
