I have downloaded three different programs to change the start button, and none of them work! No error message, just restart and nothing changes. I even tried to re-download. Do you think they are just bad downloads, or am I missing something, like a dll and wouldn't it say that?

StyleXP can do the trick. If you change the theme, it changes your start button.

I want to change just my start button tho

Are you trying to change the graphic/scheme or the text?

The graphics are in the theme files, but the "Start" text is in explorer.exe, and can be edited with ResHacker.

The text...is impossible...The start button, is an image.

You would have to create a new image, or edit this one...

What would you change your start button to anyway?

It can't be impossible as there are programs out there that claim they do just that. I have seen lots of desktop screenshots with it altered...... I want it to be blank-goes with my theme.

Hello guys,

I'm programmer of StartBtn Renamer, I hope that you found my program useful. But for now, I like to tell you an other way to rename the [start] button manualy. A great Tip indeed! :)

First you need a software which named "Resource Hacker". This free program allows you to change resources in any .exe file such as "Explorer.exe", which includes the [start] button's Label. You can visit http://www.download.com and search in there for the "Resource Hacker" keyword. After you download it from there:

Step #1)

A- Run "Resource Hacker" and open the file "%windir%\Explorer.exe".

B- You see a Tree of all Resources in this file, expand the "String Table

C- Find the "start" and replace it with your own text. then press the [Compile Script] button.

D- SAVE "Explorer.exe" AS "MyStart.exe" (I mean do not save the original Explorer.exe, but SAVE it AS a new file)

E- Quit "Resource Hacker".

Step #2)

A- Click on the [start] button and choose the "Run..." item from the start menu. (Or use the shortcut key WinKey+R)

B- Type "RegEdit" in the Run "Dialog Box". And then press the [Ok] buton to run the "Registry Editor" program.

C- Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" and find the "Shell" property.

D- Replace value of the "Shell" property to "MyStart.exe".

E- Quit "Registry Editor".

F- Restart your system.

Note about Registry Editor:

if you did not find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon", you can search the Registry for the "Explorer.exe", to do this use the Edit Menu | Find Next (Ctrl+F).

I hope that you finally rename the [start] button succesfully :-)

Have a nice day,
