16x dvd drive disc or 52x cd rom.

Would windows (and all programs) install faster on a dvd disc than a normal cdrom?

You get a higher speed for the textmode setup (the part with a blue background) where all the files are copied over the hard drive but since the rest of the install is from the hard drive, you won't see a BIG speed increase...

Almost forgot,

There is a little boost if you use a %CDROM% variable to install your stuff on a DVD-ROM drive instead of a CD-ROM Drive. But a DVD-ROM Drive won't be faster than a Hard Drive for this task.

Overall I don't think this has a huge impact...

Other factors will affect the required time for installation... I've seen somewhere (I think it's on GreenMachine's site) a benchmark about different ways to integrate hotfixes into your setup ranging from 28 to 37 minutes total installation time.

It does have a big impact. The 16x DVD reads a lot faster. That makes windows itself copy a lot faster (in that textmode setup). No doubts about it.

As for the apps, either

1) You got all your apps in $OEM$ or;

2) You install it from the disc

In case of 1, they will be copied a lot quicker to the HD (even though they are ran from the HD after, why anyone would want to do it that way is beyond me). Copying a couple GB worth of apps from CD or DVD will make a good difference for sure. In case 2, the installers are read a lot faster from the disc too...

Either ways, all that data has to be read from the drive, and one drive is a lot faster. Also, there's more space (about 6x as much) - more space also means less disc swapping, less time spent installing apps separately, less of a need to sqeeze every single bit you can off the disc, less time to prepare the disc - less hassle overall.

It's just better overall, but some ppl still don't have DVD burners (DL DVD writers can be had for like 50$ now) or DVD drives in all their PCs so they're stuck with CDs...

thought so, thanks for the replies lads.

Do certain DVD disc read faster than other ones, ie does a 2xDVDRW disc read slower than a 8xDVDR? not sure if the 2xDVDRW would only allow reading at 2x, or would it only affect the burning speed with the reading speed being the same for all dvd's..

Since we're all trying to shave off a few minutes and mb's from our installations, might as well cover every aspect.

i know my post count is ridiculously low, i tend to just read on forums now and only post when something needs to be said. so don't slay me :eek:

cheers

edit- just saw newest reply, i'll do some testing today as i've got a few machines to do here -i'll post backl
