misskellibad1 Posted September 12, 2002 Posted September 12, 2002 Hi, all. I have another dilemma which I hope I partially solved myself.Tried to download sp1 today, and received this error:occured while copying file pchsvc.dll, cannot copy file. Then it restarted itself. It shut down repeatedly, chkdsk repeatedly. had to manually shut down. Would not boot into safe mode or last config. Shut down for hour to get the kids, and then a stop error occured.So....... I popped in the c.d. and chose repair. (hope I did the right thing) Anyway, everything is back to normal it seems-I didn't have to reinstall anything, but now there is 37 updates when this morning there were only 10 I didn't want. One which is still the sp1 which states it's in progress. So, I don't understand why there are so many updates, when everything else is the same, and what do I do about this sp1? Now I'm afraid to download it!Sorry this is a bit long, but I wanted to be as precise as possible. As always, thanks a tremendous bunch in advance
Lumber Slayer Posted September 12, 2002 Posted September 12, 2002 Since you choose the repair option it erased all previous updates that is why there is 37 now! As for SP1 make sure your in a Admin account, but sounds like a bad download!
zipp51 Posted September 12, 2002 Posted September 12, 2002 Also Sp1 is not a necessary download,as M$ states,so just as long as you can download the critical updates and your system itself is running fine then I wouldn't worry about gotta hafta have it.For example on their recomended downloads ,you were having trouble with copying with your cdrw then a download they recomend would be needed. You have to read the problem and remedy section on each update as it pertains to the problem.
misskellibad1 Posted September 12, 2002 Author Posted September 12, 2002 Thanks for the replies.I am still a bit confused however, from Lumber's post.If it erased all previous updates why do some still show as already installed? As for sp 1 I have been diligent about keeping everything up to date, so I'm not going to go through that again!
zipp51 Posted September 12, 2002 Posted September 12, 2002 Miss, when you go on windows update and it scans for updates just choose the critical updates and install them and if it says you have installed them allready just reinstall. If you have a 56k modem this may take some time,or order the cd for sp1 when you can.
misskellibad1 Posted September 13, 2002 Author Posted September 13, 2002 Thanks zipp, that was the answer I was looking for.
