artpc Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 HI. I bought new MB and different components, when I started all my windows does not want to take off , How start Windows XP with new MB to does not install new WINDOWS ???
baggers02 Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 Simply boot from your Win XP CD and just follow it through until you get the bit where it searches for current installations. It will list your current windows install and select this and select to repair it, it looks like its doing a clean install but its not. When all is done your windows machine will boot and everything will be intact, however you may need to reinstall service packs etc. There is prob an easier way to do this as someone will no doubt point out,but i have done this on a number of occasions no problems
tarquel Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 And on a rare occasion, you may find that after replacing the 'MB', you might not even need to repair the installation. My example would be with an old Soltek motherboard ad replacing it with a new KT6 Delta - both VIA chipset-based which is probably one of the reasons why.Of course, you might have further possibilities if you can 'System Prep' it and then replace your motherboard. Of course you'll have to (in most cases) go through the welcome & activation process but it might be a solution for those who want to replace the MB and not have to start from fresh or attempt a repair (they dont 'always' work )Regards,N.
jaclaz Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Just for the record:If you change your motherboard, you do not need to FORMAT (i.e. wipe out ALL info on Hard Disk), but being it XP you almost certainly will need to:1) Re-install Windows XP2) Re-activate it (if it is an OEM version, M$ WILL NOT DO IT)3) Re-install all applicationsThe above means that DATA only will be left untouched. The re-install is due to the fact that the hardware , hence related drivers will be different. There are some ways to "transport" the OS to other hardware, but they do not prevent the activation problem, and usually are far to complicated to be worth it, however if you are interested, find here a couple brief tutorialshttp://www.theeldergeek.com/move_harddrive.htmhttp://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.htmljaclaz
Jito463 Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 2) Re-activate it (if it is an OEM version, M$ WILL NOT DO IT)They will if you tell them you just had to reinstall Windows.Trust me, I know what I'm doing (arcane reference for those who know)
tarquel Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 yep....after all - so long as its legit - there's always the phone activation that I've had to use before (with custommer's new OEM's) and never had a problem on the phone with them Regards,N.
jaclaz Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 They will if you tell them you just had to reinstall Windows.Correct.They won't if you tell them the TRUTH (that you have changed the motherboard with a different one).Or at least the above has happened twice to my friends, maybe they were not smart enough, or the MS guys on the other side of the phone were the wrong ones?jaclaz

After explaining that I just installed a new mainboard, they gave me a new activation code without futher questions...
artpc Posted September 22, 2004 Author Posted September 22, 2004 This is not the problem the serial number, windows does not start after the change of the equipment, I do not know why ?when I had windows 98 after the change of the equipment the system diagnosed again components of the new computer and the system started normally, instead windows XP does not start at the beginning , is the black screen and all stands. So I have a question or an use of the option of the repair it will leave my applications which previously I had installed ????
jaclaz Posted September 23, 2004 Posted September 23, 2004 when I had windows 98 after the change of the equipment the system diagnosed again components of the new computer and the system started normally, instead windows XP does not start at the beginningBecause XP is NOT 98!If you had read the two links I previously posted, you would have seen that.If you have an original XP CD you can try to repair your system, boot from CD, then select the R (repair) option. Please find here a guide:http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How to Repair Windows XP by Installing Over top of Existing Setup:jaclaz
