SP2: Old apps won't install because of CONFIG.NT

Featured Replies

I'm confused.

When I try to install Acrobat Reader 4.05 (I like this version because it's FAST) or ACDSEE 3.something (I like this version because it's FAST, too) or some other old program (like a Swedish-English dictionary) I get this:

-------------------------------

16-bit Windows Subsystem

-------------------------------

C:\Windows\System32\CONFIG.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

*Close*  *Ignore*

I suspect this has something to do with SP2, since I never had this problem with a fully updated SP1. But it could be a coincidence, of course. Does anybody know what the problem is? How do I get around it?

(Compatibility mode and its various settings has been of no help to me.)

Can't really help, but can mention that ACDSee Classic 2.43 works on SP2 (its as fast as ACDSee 3)

Christer Tamm,

What you need to do is get into the C:\Windows\System32\ folder of a non SP2 build and copy the config.nt and autoexec.nt files.

Then paste them into the corresponding system32 folder in the new SP2 build.

This worked for me, let me know how you go!

I see you have the possibilty to ignore. Can you choose to Ignore and continue?
