Well, you gotta have a fast internet connection, for one.

Then, you have to have a good OS, "Windows XP Home" is not recommended. Windows 2000, Windows XP Pro, Windows 2003 Server, or any deriviative of Linux should be your best choice.

If you have Windows, which I guess is the case, go to http://httpd.apache.org and downlaod the software. Read all the readme's.

If you want to use a server technology, go to http://www.php.net and http://www.mysql.com to download the Hypertext Preprocessor and MySQL databases, respectively.

Once you have everything set up, go to Start - Run - "cmd"

Type ipconfig

One of those IP addresses will be your external IP address.

From then on, it's as they say, history.

To note, there is much more to web server running than that. There have been books written on how to run a server, so my suggestion is you go out to your local library and search for a book on Windows 2000 or PHP.

If you want a really easy to use webserver, get Abyss Web Server from http://www.aprelium.com

The current public release works flawlessly but lacks some features, you probably wouldn't notice the missing features yet though since it seems like you are just beginning. If you sign up on the forums, you can download the beta for the next version which has a lot more features and runs pretty good for a beta version. A lot of tutorials posted there also so check it out.

Or maybe he is trying to create a home network? He said that he wanted to make his computer a server. He didn't say that he wanted to make it a web server.

If you want to make your computer a server server, then I suggest getting a good book on Windows XP Professional (if that is an OS that you lease a licence to).

That is true, but that would belong on the Networks, Internet, & Security forums instead of Hosting (IIS, Apache, etc.)

The first post in this thread wasn't very specific. Could also be ftp server, mail server, DNS server, game server, and all the others you can think of.
