jlbf Posted August 7, 2002 Posted August 7, 2002 Ever since I installed a fresh copy of XP my task manager has not worked propery, and what I mean by that is it always closes on me after about 1 - 5 minutes of use, and sometimes it doesn't even open.I used Windows 2000 for about 2 1/2 years before XP so I'm familiar with how things work, but this one has me baffled.I checked the logs and this is the only thing I can find that relates to the task manager:File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the system file is 5.1.2600.0.For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.Any help is much appreciated!
Aaron Posted August 7, 2002 Posted August 7, 2002 I'm guessing there's Virus Activity attempting to replace your taskmgr.exe file, but gets replaced with an original copy quick enough by Windows File Protection, so you don't notice any infection.Run an AntiVirus Scanner on your system, I recommend Symantec's AntiVirus or Eset's NOD32 according to the success/failure ratings at www.Virusbtn.com
jlbf Posted August 7, 2002 Author Posted August 7, 2002 I don't know, it's been doing this ever since I installed XP. I had a pre-release of XP before I finally went out and bought the final version.. formatted my computer and installed the new XP, and it's been doing it ever since.
Aaron Posted August 7, 2002 Posted August 7, 2002 Try temporarily disabling your Windows File Protection (WFP) and play about with TaskManager for a while.I don't know how to disable WFP myself, but there's plenty of guides listed in google if you search. Good Luck!
LS_Dragons Posted August 7, 2002 Posted August 7, 2002 no insult intended - but are you sure task manager is not running? In XP - task manager by default hides inactive apps? Do you have a clock visible? Do you have a hash mark where you think task manager should be?LS
canny Posted August 7, 2002 Posted August 7, 2002 think you might be better off formatting if you want the task manager tbhAltho, the pre-beta and the release version is kinda different these days
