anyway to disable the way it auto opens the atachment ? (or tries to anyhow)

Dont know of a fix for this problem yet, although I did read an article that M$ were looking at a SP to fix the way OE defaults/opens emails. Without OE automatically opening them as soon its highlighted, giving you the option to choose what to do with unknown mail.
