I have recently acquired Windows XP media centre and Tablet PC edition, however i don't fully understand what these really are.

As u can see in the screenshot, this is media centre edition. The folders and files are alike those of Windows XP Professional except for the folder cmpnents and the files win51ip2 and win51ic.

Whats up with that?

media centre and tablet edition are based on xp pro so expect the same files, if you dont know what your playing with should you really be playing with it?

In the components folder there is a file called mediactr.cab, What is this file?

This contains the files to install media center. The tabletpc one contains files for the tablet pcs. The netfx one contains the dot net framework 1.0.

these files are like IDs when running the installation from the startup, DOS recognises the CD by these files. They only contain the word "Windows" inside. i.e. in WinXP toy'll see "win51ip" and WinXP SP2 it's "win51ip.sp2" and so on.

Windows XP Media Center Edition is a version of Windows XP that is designed for media organization and viewing in mind. The thought was that you would use XP-MCE to run a home theatre system.

Windows XP Tablet PC Edition includes the neceesary files to make use of the touch-screen capabilities of tablets. This includes things such as text recognition software, Windows Journal, and some other features.

How did you "acquire" these versions of Windows?
