Unwanted "fixes"

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just a thought but since the download list is online only (so it seems) how would someone go about eliminating some of the "fixes" so things like .NET and WMP9 are NOT included.

I can't speak for the rest of you but I for one have no use for either of those at all and would much prefer to eliminate them entirely. If the particular system needs/wants them afterwards they can be installed easily enough. However in 99.99% of the cases here they are not only not wanted but simply waste a bunch of resources.

It would be nice to be able to edit/select from the list of "hotfixes" to eliminate things such as this.

actually i did search.. results it returned were useless

and I realize it can be done that way but I should have stated more clearly what I meant. Regarding having access to the "download" list before it's acted upon. Or better still perhaps having an entry in the ini to disable use of certain "fixes" which would be even better :)

if you don't want WMP9, WM9 HotFix, DotNet FX, Journal Viewer, replace ADD by DEL in the list like in my personal 2K FRA list.

you should use a special path for the HFlist URL in XPCREATE.INI to use your personal offline HFList instead of the official.

go to zippi post here for details :

Looks like Bilou_Gateux has this HFLIST thing mastered!

... Now, to re-think those specs ...

As for which updates are downloaded, I leave that to be dictated by Windows Update and the MBSA. Save's me from my own personal evaluation of what is "good" and "bad" ...

the downside to that is exactly what I was trying to avoid.. it forces the avg user and/or anyone not technically inclined to install MP9 for example..

A small switch would be to give a user downloadable copy of the HFlist so it can be edited.

Or better still how about an entry in the ini where unwanted fixes filenames could be added so they are not downloaded/integrated. For anyone happy with the default method it wouldn't interfere but for those that would like moree control it would allow such easily. Given the structure of the ini I wouldn't think that would be hard to add in. :)

Just my CDN 2 cents at least.

Otherwise it so far is a seriously KICKASS piece of work. My hat off to you

Now if only someone would do the same for "shrinking" the cd ~_^

(if u reallt want to know what I mean icq me for details)

I hate to insist ... but dictating the hotfix lists for the average or non-technically inclined user is exactly what I am after. If such a User cannot download his own hotfixes, I sure don't want to try to debug his installation problems. WMP9 updates without installing WMP9, Java updates with SP1A, files renamed that adversly effects XPCREATE: those are headaches I will not have.

Other threads here have shown how to create and use your own download list, without the need for a web server, so again, those with the ability can do it. Personally, I would think that just downloading and maintaining your own set of updates would be easier than updating a list: that is what I do ...

Your two Canadian Cents are appreciated, as is all constructive criticism. Were this a commercial product, such options would probably be incorporated. But alas, only one user has admitted using this in a commercial environment (as noted in the EULA ... ). The Home Hobbiest, however, will still need to put on the thinking cap if more than the standard results are desired. Perhaps it comes down to this: making an id***-proof product will no doubtably attract idiots, and that I am not inclined to do for free.

As for shrinking Windows, this is something I have never desired to try myself, but I believe both jdeboeck's scripts, and nLite have had success in the endeavor.
