FthrJACK
The beta leak of Doom III had all the code there for it, and could be tweaked to play online as some people did.
Nologic
XtremeMaC -Doom has MP but its limited to 8 players max for broadband, since it passes a lot of data...not sure what the limit is for LAN.Maybe in a future patch they will get it kicked up to a higher number...be nice to see 16 players at least some where down the road.HL2 should be able to do 32 players from the get go...since its dealing with less data. Phyridean
Doom III also has to deal with new network bandwidth issues. Remember all the talk of if you're hit in the arm, you lose use of that arm, and everyone around you can see that bullet hole until you die? Well it requires a tremendous amount of bandwidth to make sure that everyone has the same information on everyone else. Gigabit NIC's anyone? Nologic
Phyridean -Is completely correct here, injures and dismemberments are the cause of the new bandwidth limits. It was because of this that SoF II, didn't include much of its GORE effects engine in the MP part of the game since it would lower the number of players and effectively remove 56k players. Now two years later and further broadband roll out...developers can now start using this kind of stuff more, tho really even then its going to be limited till fiber-to-home is more widely in place...which currently I've only heard of a few big roll outs in the USA & Japan. Those in the right area's could actually be able to play with 32 players...provided every one is on fiber. Phyridean
Methinks Doom III is going to be limited to lan party gaming when it comes to players above the current 8. The fiber infrastructure won't be in place for some time, and by then, we'll have games that further push the boundaries of data transmission speeds.Oh, and to save yourself some typing, feel free to call me "Phy"
