Hello, a friend just got broadband, and going through a Linksys 4 port router he has problems with getting his e-mail & downloading files. He can surf the internet behind dchp w/out a problem. Could it be that his isp can "see" the router and wants more money for more hook-ups?

The isp web site is pretty vauge about this subject, and blames his problems on Microsoft. :)

Just wondering if any other Comcast users have the inside skinny.

Thanks,

Most likely, he didn't configure the router properly. Not sure why he would have a problem seeing his email, but the downloading would be caused by the router. He should look up the ports that he needs enabled, and open them up in the router.

As for the ISP, I doubt they are doing that. Comcast will just kick you off, then you would have to find out why by calling them. Usually they will send you an email after they kick you off, but good luck reading it.

Thanks Sleepnmojo,

Me thinks he has the router set to automatic, and it needs the dns server address punched in for configuration. I would go over and configure it for him but he lives miles away. His other problem is a lack of patience  He will just click all over the place until something breaks! All I know is that after a new H. drive install, and a fresh install of XP Home; the computer worked fine before he took it home. :)

Update . . .

Found out he had to clone his mac address (of his nic) on to the router. That was the only way his modem would let anything through the router. He can surf the internet, (2 comp.) download files, recieve email, but he can't send email!

Timeouts when sending. Any clues why all the above would work except for outgoing mail?

He promises that OE is configured properly. I imagine something in account properties was left unchecked or enabled. Sound familiar?

Thanks,

Treeman
