CypherBit Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 I've been messing around with an unattended, customized (removed what I thought I won't use with nLite) version of Windows XP SP1 lately and have come across a problem.I'm testing it under vmware since I don't have a pc to spare and every time I want to create a new account (am already running Windows without any problems) Start\Control Panel\User Accounts it freezes...I can't create a new account. I then tried Start\Run\rundll32 netplwiz.dll,UsersRunDll and get this error: "error in netplwiz.dll missing entry:usersRunDll" I thought I'm making some progress here since my netplwiz.dll is having some problems so I compared the one from the customized version with the "normal" one I have on a different PC. They were exactly the same and I can create a new user acc on the other PC without any warning or anything...it works like it should. So now I'm lost what exactly is causing this problem, am I not running a service that might be needed to create a user acc, don't I have a file that is needed or is it something else? What is causing it and how do I solve it, btw I can create a new user acc using Start\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management without any problems whatsoever but that's not how I'm used to doing things (although I can if needed) but would really like to find a solution for what I described above.Thx in advance to anyone who will come up with any advice/solution/idea,..
MCT Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 it could be possible that u screwed something up , by removing something, maybe com+ ?nlite is a great program, but u need 2 read & understand the stuff b4 just thinking u dont need it, i remove almost everything it has 2 offer, and my pc runs great...also..does vmware free often? try allowing it more ram?what are your pc specs? do u have enough 2 run vmware?regards
CypherBit Posted June 26, 2004 Author Posted June 26, 2004 MCT thx for the prompt reply. I read quite a bit about nlite and Windows in general so I have a pretty good idea what can be removed without causing any problems and that is why I didn't remove any of the experimental options...still I'm thinking something about those lines as well just have no idea what.VMware doesn't freeze at all, didn't happen to me once except when I try to make a new account in the manner I described. I also have RAM on maximum for best performance and another thing I don't think I'd be getting that "error in netplwiz.dll missing entry:usersRunDll" if the problem was RAM reletad. It could be a VMware problem in general but I doubt it cause IIRC I was able to make a new acc on a normal XP under VMware np. BTW another friend tested the same .iso I made under VMware and had the exact same problem...he runs other OS's just fine so resources aren't what's causing this...I think. On another note neither I or he were able to install VMware tools for that particular OS...they install np for others...it's probably not related but thought it can't hurt if I mention it.
MCT Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 weird.. for the vmware tools, are u under the name "Administrator" ?ive had a prob just recently where vmware tools only would install under the administrator account, even tho the account i ran it from had admin privledges..but what worked for me, was just double clicking the .msi file inside the cd ISO, that fixed my prob...try puting that .dll in the "keep" section of nlite, so it wont get deleted or modified maybe?(u will have 2 run nlite on a clean OS that hasnt been modified by it, 2 make sure your not getting currupt entries on top of 1 and other)regards
CypherBit Posted June 26, 2004 Author Posted June 26, 2004 weird.. for the vmware tools, are u under the name "Administrator" ?No I'm under a different name so that could be it.but what worked for me, was just double clicking the .msi file inside the cd ISO, that fixed my prob...Which .msi file inside which .iso?try puting that .dll in the "keep" section of nlite, so it wont get deleted or modified maybe?(u will have 2 run nlite on a clean OS that hasnt been modified by it, 2 make sure your not getting currupt entries on top of 1 and other)Don't think it will help since the .dll is exactly the same on my other normal Win XP box but am willing to try pretty much anything so this will be one of those "tries" hopefuly some1 else will come up with another idea
MCT Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 on the vmware window click the VM button, then it should auto load the vmware tools in your virtual machine, goto my computer, right click the cd drive (usually D:\) then goto explore, and click the msi file , i think its called vmware_tools.msi (i could be wrong tho) but i think its the only 1 there regards
CypherBit Posted June 26, 2004 Author Posted June 26, 2004 OK thx MCT will do that...but as far as my original problem is concerned i don't think I'll even try puting that .dll in the "keep" section of nLite since I got my hands on another netplwiz.dll and that is also exactly the same as the one I have on my customised version of XP and another normal XP box...so all three r the same. It has to be something else, what I have no idea.
MCT Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 will u post your nlite files?attach them in a rar/zip so we can see them? may help if u can tell us everything that was removed via the config fileswhen u used nlite did u use it on an original source (copied from your original xp disc?)regards

MCT Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 in your log netplwiz.dll isnt removed, so i doubt this is an nlite problemtry 2 make your disc without nlite with the same settings/tweaks 2 see if it works ok?regards
Alanoll Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 if you use nLIte....use a pure source. Also on the first try, use ONLY the recommended settings. Don't delve too deep if it doesn't work.Try a base CD if you use nLite without adding anything either. Go one step at a time.
CypherBit Posted June 26, 2004 Author Posted June 26, 2004 MCT did what u and Alanoll suggested and here r the changes I made (these r the changes I always make except for the "select components for removal" didn't remove anything this time):added svcpack.inf (deleted svcpack.in_), added winnt.sif and added these lines to dosnet.inf[OptionalSrcDirs]UpdateAlso applied various regtweaks and a few windows updates, like I always do...nothing new there. The problem is gone.So now I'm wondering what do I have to do to make this work, should I post some logs, my dosnet.inf, svcpack.inf anything...cause everything was done exactly like I always do it except for removing components?
MCT Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 u probly just removed something crutial to your setup, so just go back & add 1 thing at a time, its time consuming, but at the end of the day, u know it works regards
CypherBit Posted June 26, 2004 Author Posted June 26, 2004 Oh was afraid u were gonna say that r there components that r more likely to have caused this I mean is there a way I could reduce the trial and error process?
MCT Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 basically, just use what it selects as "safe" then remove others, only 1 or 2 at a timeregards
