ectavares Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 Hi!I've installed windows xp pro and windows 2000 pro with a dual boot.I 've decided to format my hard drive but I still have the menu asking me if I want to run win xp or win 2000.I know how to disable but why it happens?thx
LiquidSage Posted May 18, 2004 Posted May 18, 2004 You did not format the system's primary boot partition. This happens if you have more than 1 hd, or more than 1 partition. You can check which is booting the system by finding ntldr , boot.ini, ntdetect.com or... open Disk Management and see what partition is defined as 'system'.You will need to edit boot.ini (uncheck 'read-only') and delete the OS that is not used.
RyanVM Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 If you only have one main partition, this is simply a matter of WinXP setup not overwriting the boot sector. In Windows, open boot.ini (it's a hidden file on the c:\ drive) and remove the line referring to Windows 2000. Be aware that boot.ini may be read-only and you might have to change that attribute prior to editing.
P51D Mustang Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Start|Run|msconfig is a quick way to get there-to the boot.ini that is
