Problems after installing SP1

Hey guys,

I've made the changes to the CD-KEY prior to installing SP1 (i had the FCK... one and changed it) and the installation went fine, but when I rebooted, it was acting weird, showed some error. I tried going back to the last known good config. but it didn't seem to help, so I started up in safe mode and tried going back to a restore point i made prior to installing SP1. it went through the recovery process, but after rebooting it just gave me a black screen (though there was an active mouse cursor on) and when I tried to go back to last known good config. it does the same. still does.

I ran the XP installation again and chose the "repair a previous installation" option, but that didn't do alot of good (though halfway through that it finally showed me the notification of completing system restore) since after the installation was done, it kept acting the same.

If anyone could advise me on to fix this, i would be beyond grateful. Otherwise, I would have to delete all the XP system and also programs not to mention all the hardware and network settings that took me ages to fine-tune, which means a huge headache and an bigger waste of time. I'm officially beyond desperate...

so... ANYONE? :)

Ben.

It was a beta release so some peole really had bad experiences with SP1, some didn't. If all your attempts had already failed to restore your XP then a format and reinstall seems to be the only recourse.

A bit late to offer this --- BUT -- they info I read on SP1 indicated that you could install it with the ability to uninstall. You had to select that option during the install process. Oh Well - you are beyond that point now. 1st thing I would try is to just install XP again. It will tell you you already have it installed - but DO NOT SELECT REPAIR -- select new installation. This just might leave your programs etc in place. I have seen it leave them - and not leave them, so you are just giving it a shot. If it doesn't leave them, but goes ahead and installs - you still might be able to find ad copy data files to a new location. Then I would go ahead and FORMAT --> REINSTALL.

Oh - and then wait for M$ to RTM the SP1 before installing. They are warning ALL beta testers to NOT INSTALL the beta on their 'main productivity system' - indicating that they are not very sure about its stability.

:)
