aranbadan88 Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 I bought a 2.5" HDD on Aliexpress and it is inside an enclosure case. I know it is used, but most of the 2.5" HDDs sold on Aliexpress are used but show 2 hours of use and good health on crystaldiskinfo. What do they do? Do these Aliexpress sellers also modify, remove or disable important functions within the firmware such as power management or other features, or do they use firmware from another HDD model?
j7n Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 There might be a way to reset the usage statistics with a service cable and tools, which allow to write to hidden areas of the disk. I don't think there is any benefit of chaging the firmware to you or the seller. Power management you usually want to disable if you put it in a stationary desktop system to avoid the disk starting and stopping or parking the heads, which creates wear. I've not seen any sales of HDD on AliExpress that were attractively priced. HDD is a realatively cheap item, heavy (3.5'') and at risk of being damaged in mail. They like to sell items like an SSD in a padded envelope.
aranbadan88 Posted December 23, 2024 Author Posted December 23, 2024 Has anyone here analyzed a 2.5" HDD purchased on Aliexpress? Do they also change the firmware, disable or remove functions such as parking, power management and features?
aranbadan88 Posted December 24, 2024 Author Posted December 24, 2024 Do they change or disable some system settings (such as power management) within the firmware and does this affect the parking system? my hdds Western Digital WDC WD10JPVX-08JC3T5, HGST APPLE HDD HTS541010A99E662 inside enclosure kesu 2530
