If it's not too much to ask  , can you share what the issue was with the previous FFplay offering?

... Well, I think I spoke too soon  ; while, indeed, MP4 media files with h264+aac now don't cause an FFplay crash, a tagged (metadata+cover) MP4 file with audio-only (HE-AACv1) still leads to a crash:
