Yes , it is more than 20 years that I boot systems and replace their files (though not professionally, only as a hobby). But there are good system files and bad system files, so it all depends, if you need advice/help you will need to be specific. jaclaz

Unfortunately, Microsoft thought Internet Explorer should be a system component and put files on System32. So these files are "protected".
jaclaz Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 (edited) Hmmm. Protected by what exactly? WFP was introduced in XP, AFAICR, Win2k should be free from that. <- Edit: Brain fart, disregard. Maybe you are having some kind of (NTFS) ACL permissions, if I were you I would first try the *whatever* you are trying to do on an install on FAT32. Only for the record, my idea of "specific" is a little more narrow than "Internet Explorer files in Win 2K", in some cases (but shouldn't be yours) it is possible to replace file contents by using direct disk access. jaclaz Edited September 19, 2021 by jaclaz

I can change the files only by using a live system which is unpractical.
jaclaz Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 I remembered it wrongly, 2K has WFP allright: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/description-of-the-windows-file-protection-feature-db28f515-6512-63d1-6178-982ed2022ffb Anyway, it can be disabled: https://www.mdgx.com/2k1.htm#DFP but there was another way by Fred De Vorck, and yet another one making use of an empty SFCFILES.DLL https://web.archive.org/web/20110929040602/http://www.vorck.com/windows/software.html https://web.archive.org/web/20110717232512/http://www.vorck.com/windows/data/sfcfiles.zip jaclaz 1

Thanks you for all the support.
