Windows ME: why the wireless intel 2200BG is installed?

Featured Replies

theres no intel 2200BG wireless drivers for win98..... but the Windows ME install it(even be for win2k or winxp...

but i get '!' on driver icon(Device Manager)... why i get the '!'?

there is no driver for 2200BG, but ME find somewhere inf file with matched ven&dev and string "2200BG"

INF files which are used to install drivers can work on multiple Windows versions (one INF file can support 98 SE, ME, 2000 and XP for example).

This doesn't mean that the driver itself, which are the SYS files, will work.
Intel forgot to disable support for Windows 98 SE/ME for the 2200BG in the INF file.

Windows is naive and will process any INF file and its corresponding SYS files, as long as the INF is valid, even if SYS files won't work. Since the SYS file was not made for ME, it fails to load it, that's what causes the yellow ! icon.
