I am not able to make head or tail of what I read about SP4 and have no clue about how to download and implement it. But as long as I can manage to stay out of trouble I can do without it.

Just the last Windows Updates (no frills). Use nLite for creating a Final (EOL) CD. Any other Updates are non-WindowsXP (Optionals) and/or Post-EOL (e.g. XP POS - see thread).

 

Bear in mind, Windows Update (for XP) could disappear any time (like 9x and 2K). Also, Windows Update *only* updates what you have installed and (sometimes) doesn't pay attention to Superseded (installs older, then newer Fixes).
