Explorer.exe keeps crashing

I recently upgraded to Win10 from Win7SP1. I find Win10 to be pretty good, except for the annoying explorer.exe crashes. It happens consistently when I right click on the ThisPC icon on my desktop or on any other folder icon. I checked the Event Viewer and a bunch of Error and Information events are reported under the Application section of Windows Logs.

From these logs I believe that explorer.exe is faulting with KERNELBASE.DLL. The error log right after that reports, "Failed to schedule Software Protection service for re-start at 2115-07-18T05:33:17Z. Error Code: 0x80041318."

I have created a dump when explorer.exe crashed and have included a link to the zipped dmp file.

Could someone help me sort this out?

Thanks

Without looking into your crash dump, I suggest that you may have a malfunctioning Shell Extension.

Since the problem is reproducible, one way to diagnose and ultimately correct such problems is to run the freeware program Shell Extensions Viewer (ShellExView) by NirSoft (you can find it on the web).

You'll want to systematically disable non-Microsoft shell extensions, log off/on, and test.  Use a binary process (e.g., disable half, and test, then if the problem is corrected, re-enable half of what you disabled, then test, and repeat until you've nailed it down to one or several offending Shell Extensions, which you can then permanently disable.  Once you have a good idea what package is causing the problem, you can go out on the web and look for an update to it that's Win 10 compatible.

Good luck.

Thank you NoelC and Tripredacus. Its was definitely one of the Autodesk Shell Extensions. Narrowed it down and disabled it. Problem solved. (Y)
