Hey guys, this is my first post and i was wondering if anybody could help me with a problem i am having. Ever since i updated from windows 98 to xp, every time i play a game that requires a cd to be played, after about 10-15 minutes of playing, the screen will go black and my computer will restart. But, when i play other games like counter-strike that do not require cd's to be in the cd rom i do not have this problem. Does anybody know what is wrong with my computer? Any help is appreciated.

Upgrading from Windows 98 to XP is problem-prone and can cause all sorts of problems...

Still, try updating the graphics drivers for your card (there are new driver updates every month or so for ATI/Nvidia)

Update your video card drivers, and lower the hardware exceleration (using dxdiag.exe > video tab). If the hardware exceleration fixes the issue, it could be a driver issue or general hardware failure. If you have another partition, do a clean install of windows on it, to rule out bad hardware. Under system properties uncheck 'auto restart' on blue screen.

Since youre getting a blue screen, something running in kernel mode is causing the problem (could be user mode but doubtful). That leads us to drivers. An old incompatible driver could be the problem. Boot into safe mode, and try to play the game there. If that works, it's either a bad video card driver, or 3rd party driver. If it's not the video card driver, use sigverif.exe to isolate unsigned drivers. Search support.microsoft.com for information on how to do this.

If you're on Windows XP, you can download drivers for your card at Nvidia's home page. Simply download the file on that page, and install it like you would any other program. It will automatically install the drivers.

ok i updated the drivers from the link and before u told me to lower my hardware acceleration, could u tell me how to do that.

To lower the hardware acceleration, go to the Display Properties page (right click desktop, properties or find the link in Control Panel), and click the Settings tab. Next, click the "Advanced" button, followed by the "Troubleshoot" tab. You can lower it there. Good luck!

p.n.v. - cazzman edited his post because it was not the correct information. My previous post tells you how to lower it. Was I not clear enough?
