MS Exchange Server Connect to client software

Featured Replies

I just created a practice server 2008 r2 virtual machine and I have been playing with various things that I know I will be learning in class this fall. I decided to play with exchange server 2010 the install went fine I did defaults for all questions asked. Once I restarted my server I found the web addition for the server that runs via IIS7 the local url is https://mailserver.mshome.com/owa that worked fine I was able to send and receive mail between my domain users. now I want connect to my server using thunderbird and windows live essentials mail client. I have tried set it manualy useing these settings for IMAP mailserver.mshome.com port 993 (not sure on port number)

thanks in advance helpdesk98

The default imap port isn't 993 it is 143. 993 is for IMAPS (IMAP + TLS) and it is enabled by default in exchange 2010. I would disable TLS if you don't have a real cert.

Also be aware that some client doesn't support sending email through imap/imaps and then need an smtp/smtps.

Also note that for users, in general, external access via IMAP and POP is disabled. You may have to go to the properites of that user account in the Exchange console and enable their access to the server via those protocols.

I opened services and set IMAP & POP to start automatically that seemed to fix most of my problems thanks cluberti! When I enter some account information into the Windows Live Mail Client it excepted my account and downloaded all folders and messages. I seem to be able to receive all messages, but I can not send messages from the client I got an authentication error saying "The account cbarnes@mshome.com can not be authenticated" (something close to that the VM is at the school so I can not access it from home)

edit: I am going to download virtual box & the required iso from msdn aa and build a box at home

If you are still using Thunderbird, try playing with your Account Settings. The Outgoing Server will show up on the bottom. Try changing the Connection Security and Authentication Method drop downs.

JFYI I had used Thunderbird for years on my old companies Exchange server, but new company doesn't allow Thunderbird to authenticate on a send, just like your error. However I do not know how to fix it so it works.

I played with all the authentication settings for Thunderbird, but I could not get it to work. Eventually I got Windows Live Mail and Outlook to work I was just using the wrong email. I was trying to use the domain log in has the email (tbarnes@domain.com) instead of (timbarnes@domain.com). I will have to play with it some more this time I was mostly exploring just trying to get a feel of how it works. Thanks for the help!
