t0rch1t Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 (edited) Hello,I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I am trying to change the keyboard layout from the standard qwerty to the Dvorak but when I try, I get an error saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Does anyone know what registry setting I would need to change to switch to the Dvorak keyboard or what the command would be that I could run from the dos prompt? I tried running the intl.cpl file, but when I click the details button on the languages tab, that is when I get that error. Does anyone know what command is being performed when that button is clicked? Any help would be appreciated. I am running XP sp3.thanks,t0rch1t Edited December 23, 2010 by t0rch1t
Tripredacus Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Firstly, is this how you went about adding the support?http://www.microsoft.com/enable/training/windowsxp/keyboardlayout.aspxOther questions:1. Are you logged onto the system with an account with Administrative rights?2. Did you modify your Windows install at all with tools like nLite or something similar?3. Does anything get logged in Event Viewer when this error occurs?

Does anything get logged in Event Viewer when this error occurs?I am logged in to the machine with administrative rights. The install was from our RIS server. I don't see any errors that would relate to getting the error message. I get the error message on step 3 in the provided link, when I go to click on the details button. "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file" Do you know what file or whatever that is trying to be accessed? Do you know what action that details button is trying to perform? I think this is a group policy thing.thanks
Tripredacus Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Does this happen with every deployment, or just one PC and other ones work?
t0rch1t Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Does this happen with every deployment, or just one PC and other ones work?It happens on all machines. I am just trying to find out that comand is executed when the details button is pressed. If I knew that, I could prolly work around it and get on with it.thanks
Tripredacus Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Are you using a modified XP installation such as nLite or are you using a Distribution Share?
t0rch1t Posted January 7, 2011 Author Posted January 7, 2011 the install is from our RIS server, nothing special. Standard install. Do you know what is being run when the details button is clicked?
Tripredacus Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Do you know what is being run when the details button is clicked? No I do not. However there is a way to find out. First you can use ProcMon on the system you get the error. If you have access to another PC with the same version of XP installed where this does work, you can run ProcMon on that one and compare the results.
t0rch1t Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 That's an idea. I'll get that and see if it shows me what is being called. thanks.
