Cab error is serious problem you need new disc?

Hi 1st post Concerning Win XP Pro,

A long while back i had success in using nlite and sp3 (from oem sp1 original), but since then there have been some 200+ hotfixes and updates. So i decided to update the install disc. the kids keep screwing the system up.

The problem i have is the integration of the hotfixes & updates. I keep getting the error of a corrupt cab file and a couple of others too. Nlite tells me this is serious problem and i should get new disc.

Now i have had a bit of a play several times before posting.

I started again from the sp1 disc and slipstreamed sp3 and had no errors, I then installed this image to the hard drive with no errors and it was fully automated. So that says to me there was no problems with cab files e.t.c

I then down loaded the hotfixes e.t.c from 2 sites (as i have done this more than once).

Firstly i tried to integrate them with the sp3 that was already done and got the errors.

Next i tried from a fresh set up and still got the errors.

I proceeded with the iso to a disc and tried to install, but fraught with errors having to skip files on install (not unattended any more) so i aborted install.

Any suggestions please ?

Sorry for long 1st post.

Any suggestions please ?

Yes, and it's in red bold text up your screen; please attach your "last session.ini".

For the rest, always start from an original set of files or one you've ONLY integrated SP3 (with or without nLite), then run nLite with all your modifications in one go. Only apply hotfixes/updates you need and not those for components that are not integrated in your source.

Missing files errors are what you get when you apply SP3 on a modified set of files.

Cheers.

Thanks for the quick reply, i will attach the .ini for you i hope it helps it was the last one i tried with sp3...

If you want i will do it again pre sp3 but it will be the same result.

Sorry perhaps i did not make my post very clear...

I do not have a problem applying sp3 to the original o.e.m sp1 installation CD. It works perfectly.

I only have a problem applying the hot fixes e.t.c to it, regardless of it being modified with sp3 or the original & sp3 at the same time as the hotfixes e.t.c.

Please excuse my ignorance but I downloaded this to integrate My link

I understood that the hotfixes e.t.c were generic for all xp installations post sp3 ??

Are you saying that it is something in there that is causing it ?

from oem sp1 original

Is it a Dell ?

Some people unfortunately report problems with Dell CDs (just an idea as all you do seems correct).

Missing files at install is typically caused by applying SP3 to a previously nLited source, which is not your case.

Ok thank you both for your suggestions,

Driver.cab was one error the other one was cab.lib I think not sure I was tired.

No not a Branded disc just a O.E.M XP Pro sp1a

Anyhow I went back and started all over again and got the same error.

So I looked at the Driver.cab in the ripped folder and it was 37mb, I then looked at the CD Driver.cab and that was 71mb so I copied it to the ripped folder, i couldn't find the other file.

I then started over again and nlite said i had to un-install sp3 and start again so nlite did....

and it worked no errors whoopee, so I guess the other file was in the Driver.cab ?

So in essence the copy from CD to folder was not good, no apparent damage on the CD though and I was able to copy the offending .cab

What gets me is that sp3 on its own installs fine why does it not pick up the error? and i have no problems with installing. weird eh ?

Thanks again.

pistonbroke, you should always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders and run nLite only once doing all your work. I too have had CD copy errors. These led to strange errors as you are seeing. Please look at your System Log (right click My Computer-Manage-Event Viewer-System Log) around the time you copied your CD. If you see CDPROM errors (Bad block on CDPROM), then the copy is bad. For some reason Windows does not see fit to report these errors. I would suggest you clean your CD and optical drive (I use a cleaning CD), and do the copy until you get no errors. If you continue to have errors and the CD looks good, then try another machine /drive. After you get a clean copy then run nLite again as I stated at the start of this. Enjoy, John.

@johnhc

Thanks for the reply, but i sorted problem before you posted.

If you look back at my post's you will see i had done clean rips several times as well as using sp3 integrated ones.

Thanks for the reminder about event viewer, i have to admit i forgotten all about it.Just for information purposes i have attached the log, you will see that there are cdrom errors but they were nothing to do with nlite, in fact it was a damaged dvd by the kids that i was trying to salvage regretfully no luck, and it was also well before i started to build a new image of XP. You will also see i had no other cdrom errors. I have a feeling it copied too fast but i have no way of checking other than my ears.

As regards your method of cleaning the optical drive I am afraid i don't concur with that nor would I recommend it. As the laser diode is a very sensitive piece of equipment and any scratch or mark from a brush e.t.c can render it useless. The best way and recommended way is to use compressed air you can obtain this in canister form.

The above takes me back when i use to copy my kids games for them as they were so expensive to replace, you needed tiptop drives and system as some of the copy protection required a sub channel audio signature. So i do know a little about types of drives, disc's and dyes.

Sorry went off topic there....

Regards
