problems with nlite install - how do I identify the cause?

I downloaded nlite 1.4.9.1; installed it. But can't seem to run it - I get the usual MS error msg saying "nlite has encountered a problem and needs to close, ..."

I read some of the posts here relating to install problems. I double checked the md5sum of the downloaded installer. That checked out. Do I have a .NET 2.0 problem? Because when I run the nlite installer it asks me to download the .NET V 2.0. That is already installed in my PC, so I skipped that. I have also done a repair of .NET v2.0 because, from googling around, I saw some posts saying they've fixed a similar problem to mine by doing a repair of their installed .NET 2.0.

I am running a WinXP Pro SP3.

TIA

Sounds like a .NET framework issue. Try uninstalling it then run this tool. Install it again then do a windows update so it gets patched and try again.

maskiepop, did you DL nLite from the nLite web site and check the MD5 hash provided? If not, please do so. Enjoy, John.

EDIT: Please also edit your first post and change your title to something meaningful (see Forum Rules).

Thanks guys.

Johnc, -- I got nLite from the website, and the MD5 did check out.

-x-,I had a quick read of the tool you mentioned. Scared me quite a bit.

I am not technical at all. I mess around with the commonest of Win apps, and that's about it. .NET is alien territory for me. You'll have to be a bit patient with me. If you must know, the reason I am trying to install nlite, is because I had a very difficult time recovering my system after I managed to wipe out my HD. And I still don't know how I managed to do it!

You're saying:

1) Uninstall the .NET.

o There are actually a number of versions in my WinXP (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0). The ADD/REMOVE lists v2.0, and only refers partly to components of v 4.0

o How do I uninstall? And which one do I uninstall? All versions? How do I tell what version is running on my WinXP.

2) I am under the impression that I am to use the .NET cleanup tool only if I fail the uninstall (I am assuming all the installed versions). Am I correct?

3) Is there a way for me to check if my .NET -- version whatever -- is corrupt, or is in good nick. That can save a lot of time and posts.

Thanks

If I may, what would be the intended use of nlite in the recovery of a system in which the hard disk was wiped?
