dx7vb.dll & dx8vb.dll

I've just downloaded and installed a prog which uses dx7vb.dll or dx8vb.dll. Unfortunately the prog crashes with invalid page faults.

Below is part of dxdiag.txt:

   dx7vb.dll: 4.09.0000.0900 English Final Retail 12/12/2002 00:14:32 602112 bytes
   dx8vb.dll: 5.03.2600.2180 English Final Retail 8/3/2004 22:56:44 1227264 bytes

As the DirectX version is 9.0c, why is there no dx9vb.dll? Does it use dx8vb.dll instead?

The version of dx8vb.dll I have now is for XP SP2. Should I have dx8vb.dll 4.09.000.0900? I have a backup of dx7vb.dll in \windows\sysbckup, but not dx8vb.dll. What is the best way to get the right version of dx8vb.dll?

Both modules in question are included. Not really sure how you installed an XP-SP2 version and neither here no there. Just providing links to what you are looking for. You might be able to just install the above over the "erroneous" (unsure} as they all state that there is "no uninstall".

The DX9c should have worked on 9x/me if it was for 9x/ME. Also note the first link gives the MS links for the correct versions at the bottom. It appears that the version for the DX8 module given in your post is incorrect. Get the last correct version for 9x/me from the link(s) (the Dec2006 Redist).

Also, can I safely assume that you run 98SE? You never did say (also seen post in the Flash for 95 topic).
