Automatic Updates is turned off after install

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have recently made an unattended windows XP CD using nLite but after installing Windows Automatic Updates are turned off even though I selected Default in nLite.

How to fix this?

I attached my last session.ini

Welcome to MSFN. I hope you have tested the install on a virtual machine and haven't gone through the pain of installing on a live PC and discovering it wasn't the way you wanted it. Your Last Session.ini looks very normal and basic, meaning there isn't anything inside that could have gone wrong. I'd advise you to select "Enabled" for Automatic Updates (just in case) and test it in a virtual machine. It may take a few sessions and a few tests, but the end result is always satisfactory. Just use your Last Session.ini on a fresh XP source and you won't have to repeat all the steps again.

Another advice would be to try and avoid Desktop as a working folder for add-ons (some users have reported problems). Create a folder like C:\addons and use that one.

There is no such option like "Enabled". But if selected "Download and install" and when "Scheduled day" set to "Every day" and "Scheduled time" set to 3 then it is same that Windows default (I need it to be exactly like Default). I did not know that it is the same that Windows Automatic option.

Thank you for your advice it was usefull.

Can you see for sure that it is turned off, or it just doesn't show up in the taskbar? Is it possible you have done anything to Security Center? Is the "Automatic Updates" service started? Maybe you have done something in the section for tweaking Services?

Mina, have you run nLite more than once against the same source? You should run it only once against a fresh copy of your CD files/folders. Did your oeminfo and oemlogo copy work? If not, you may need to add a Cmd /c in front of the copy commands. Please post a screen shot of your Automatic Updates tab of the My Computer Properties. Enjoy, John.

Yes I have run nLite more than once against the same source.

Oeminfo and oemlogo copy works perfectly :)

Picture what is attached is with "Default" settings:

When selected "Download and install" then it is selected "Automatic" in Windows.

Selection "Download and install" works for me, but of cource it is interesting to know why "Default" don't work.

There you go; the answer to your problem is in johnhc's post. Get a new copy of XP in your working folder and use Last Session.ini to import your desired settings. Then everything should be fine. What I said about testing in virtual machines (post #2) still applies.

Cheers,
