Norton Internet Security - how to disable background scan for faster s

May i know what can i do to disable background scanning in Norton Internet Security for faster scanning speed even though much more resouces are required?The PC is running windows XP

What version of NIS are you referring to?

There's a "default scan" at Startup in some versions that can be disabled either through some Options (remove it) or a registry hack (depending on the version). If you're referring to "auto-protect" (actively checking executed programs) I'm not really sure if there is a way short of "disabling" it. The manual-scan (right-click Partition-Folder-File + Scan) "speed" isn't going to change regardless; depends on the PC's hardware, the parameters for scanning (in the Options), and the number of scanned files.
