1ivylgr
Recently I had to have my hard drive wiped clean (for the second time in about four years, McAfee let a Trojan infect my computer). I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 and Windows XP Home. I used my Dell reinstall CD to reinstall the drives, but they aren't installing. The image of my desktop screen is small, about 5 inches by 6 inches, and I can't use Standby. I also can't completely update Norton and can't use the Microsoft Word Suite. This is what happens when I try to install the drivers:When I go to Device Manager, I'm missing Ethernet Controller, SMC SMC2632W, and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). I did a full, extended diagnostics test (going in with F12), and the result was "All tests passed." The odd thing is that when I was in that mode, my entire monitor screen was full. It wasn't that small 5 x 6-inch screen. When I inserted my Dell reinstall CD, I went to Dell Access Direct. I was OFFLINE when I did all of this. I clicked onto "Drivers." When I chose one driver, <Conextant D480 Modem>, I chose Extract. I then clicked "Continue." It appeared in C:\Dell\Drivers\R64747. I clicked Yes to All. I got the message "Success Unzipped." I clicked OK in Device Install Wizard, and clicked OK again. I get the message, "Installing Device Drivers," and I see the progress bar appear and begin to fill up. It stops at about 90 percent complete, but when it finishes, the screen says FAILURE. There are other drivers that have to be installed and I can't get them to install, either. A problem I run into when people try to help online is, the replies are a foreign language to me. I've been unemployed for some time, and I was hoping I could resolve this without having to spend a lot of money. And I'm nervous about going online without my Norton being updated. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions anyone has. Thanks!

submix8c
? Maybe it "failed" because you asked it to install a driver for a non-existent piece of hardware ?Try selecting ONLY the drivers you need, maybe one-by-one. I'd start with the video first. DigeratiPrime
This is a XP / Driver (hardware) issue so I am moving this topic to a more appropriate forum. If you can find out the HWID from Device Manager > Display Adatpers > *device* Properties > Details TabExample
