.docx converters to .doc

Hey all!

I a newby to this forum and have been reading through it. One word, "awesome"! I hope I can add something aswell as retrieve some info.

Does anyone know where I can get a free program to convert Word .docx to just reqular .doc?

If you have an older version of MS word then you can download an add-on or update from Microsoft to do the conversion from docx to doc.

While it works OK even with Office 97 under Win XP (I know, I use it in XP), the Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack doesn't work with Win9x/ME. But this will solve your problem: link

It does exactly what the OP was asking for.

Docx2Rtf v3.8===Text in col. was bad and in wrong places for the images, some backgrounds not quite right.

Only this online web site(free) has worked for me, and only really right in a .PDF file for proper looks.

Hoping this thread would continue and maybe find a better solution in the form of an apps. for a DOC. file.

It's all right, charly! The problem, for me at least, was *not* your bumping the thread, but the way you did it. And I suspect lightning slinger felt the same. You see, when one bumps a thread with a clear open question, the reason for a one-word bump post is self-evident. When that's not the case some explanation for the bump is needed, and now you provided it. So, here it goes: the link I provided above is to the previous thread on this subject, Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack doesn't work with Win9x, which has other solutions in it, besides Docx2Rtf v3.8... do read it at lenght, and maybe you'll find something you like there. The last post by Multibooter there provides a particularly interesting solution, BTW.

If you already have MS's DotNet Framework 2.0 installed (or have the space to install)....

You can use the ODF Converter Integrator:

And either OpenOffice.org 2.4.3 (Save as Microsoft Office DOC file):

or if your using at least Office 2000, install Sun's ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office:

I just ran across something else that looks promising to throw into the mix here, at least for OpenOffice.org users:

JODConverter

Doesn't exactly look like a really user friendly GUI-based program, but it certainly claims to be able to handle and convert many formats.

according to the requirements:

To use JODConverter you need:

•A Java runtime environment version 1.4 or higher

•OpenOffice.org v2.0.3 or higher; the latest stable version is usually recommended. (StarOffice 8, NeoOffice being based on OpenOffice.org should also work.)

•Any operating system for which Java and OpenOffice.org are available (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, FreeBSD, etc.)

For use as a web application / web service you will also need:

•A Servlet 2.3 container such as Apache Tomcat v4.1 or higher. (The jodconverter-tomcat package includes Tomcat.)

In any case OpenOffice.org must be running as a service for JODConverter to work.

I would assuming that would include 98.

You're welcome for the link. It's offers the best conversion I've seen too. I've actually seen this do a better job than Microsoft's own Compatibility Pack.
