chromatic47
Any recommendations for a best-performing chunksize for a P4 2gHz machine with 512mb memory? Primary use of this system is for image editing, with files in the 5 to 10 mb range. Current chunksize is 512.And in general, is it logical to increase chunksize as average working file size increases? e.g. if I start editing 100mb files, is it advisable to go from 512 to say 2048. dencorso
That's a question difficult to answer, chromatic47. You'll find something (very little) about it in my > 1 GiB thread and more about it in soporific's Auto-Patcher thread. And scattered opinions about it all over the internet. The reference work about it is Adrian Wong's Chunksize Optimization Guide. But, AFAIK, more real experimentation, leading to well-founded recommendations, needs to be done (Adrian's results are for a machine having 128 MiB of RAM... Do his results hold for any amount of RAM, or do they depend on the amount of RAM present?)... If you feel like doing it, it'd be most welcome. chromatic47
Thanks Dencorso. Lacking the patience for thorough testing I guess I'll just experiment with different chunksize on large files and see if there's any subjective difference. For now it looks like 512 is as good as any.
