technoid Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I reinstalled XP on my laptop (through restore disc). Then after setting up firewall & AV, I did a Windows Update online. I noticed that one of the updates is .NET 1.0.3705. I've never had this installed before. Usually I manually install .NET 1.1 and 2.0 (I need them both). So the question is ... is .NET 1.0 necessary? I just want to make sure so I don't bog down my fresh install with files that I may not need.
Glenn9999 Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 .NET 1.1 is an equivalent replacement to .NET 1.0. So just deny the install of the 1.0 version and install what you have and you'll be fine.
DreamSkape Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 HI,Even I have a related problem. My Add/Remove list of programs shows .Net Framework service pack1, SP2, and SP3.When I try to remove these, espescially the older ones... it shows a list of programs saying that those programs will not function if I remove them. Ironically, the list of dependencies it shows are same for each .Net framework service pack. Do I need to keep the .Net sp1 and sp2 on my computer? And most importantly, I dont remember installing .NET on my system after the last time I had a clean install.Any explanations?--Regards,DreamSkapeSigned: Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 11:33:30 AM IST
Tripredacus Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 You should keep them in there. .Net will allow a lot of other programs to run, specifically 3rd party programs and some Microsoft ones. The service packs are bug fixes. A notable .Net SP was for 3.5, since 3.0 broke stuff like RDP.

I cannot remember installing .NET on my computer, nor is it visible in the Add/Remmove Programs. The .NET framework service packs will be there only if the .NET is installed, rite? Is it possible that the .NET was installed with any other program that I installed? How can I find out if I have .NET installed?--Regards,DreamSkapeSigned: Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 7:02:29 PM IST
Tripredacus Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 The service packs supercede the normal installs in most cases. It also depends on how you install Windows. For example, slipstreamed updates do not appear in Add/Remove programs. You may also only see them if you check the "show updates" box. So you would see a 1.1 SP1 and not a 1.1. The only time you would see both is if you installed the original some long time ago and then got the update later. I think that is how it shows up on my computer at home. OK, if you click show updates, the original one appears in a branch under the SP1 listing. For example, this computer has:- Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1Now if I click show updates, it appears like this:- Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2--- .NET Framework 2--- .NET Framework ASP .NET--- .NET Framework WinForms--- Dr. Watson--- .NET Framework PreXP--- .NET Framework CLR--- .NET Framework CA--- .NET Framework CRT--- KB958481--- .NET Framework 1- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1I didn't like the things in 3.0 and 3.5, but 3.0 has about the same amount of things under it as 2.0, and 3.5 has 2 things under it. Since 1.1 was included in the install CD that was originally used to install Windows on this computer (its Server 2003 Standard x86 btw) it does not appear in Add/Remove Programs at all.
