Ryton Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 G'Day, I'm experiencing apparent random IE crashes (iexplore.exe 6.0.2800.1106 and mshtml.dll 6.0.2800.1555). To investigate if mixed file versions are the cause, I'm looking for someone who is running this setup (fully updated) and problem free to provide their IE file list per:Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools>System Information>Internet Explorer>File VersionsThanks in advance... Ryton.

Drugwash Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 (edited) For the sake of it, here's my list.<removed win.com remarks; it's just certain info unavailable, not the file itself>iexplore.exe is indeed not present because it's been renamed due to the bad habit of certain applications - not to mention malware, although I got none present - to directly call iexplore.exe instead of the default browser (SlimBrowser)msjava.dll is missing because I've uninstalled MS Java Virtual Machine.Dunno why wsock32n.dll is missing - probably it's not needed in my configuration.IE-related crashes are extremely rare on my system and usually happen due to other applications running prior to or simultaneously with the browser.advapi32.dll 4.90.0.3000 64 KB 08.06.2000 17:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMadvpack.dll 6.0.2900.2172 98 KB 01.08.2004 17:01:04 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMbrowselc.dll 6.0.2800.1106 62 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMbrowseui.dll 6.0.2800.1916 995 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:16 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMckcnv.exe 6.0.2800.1106 8 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMcomctl32.dll 5.81.4916.400 536 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMcrypt32.dll 5.131.1877.5 363 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMenhsig.dll 5.0.1877.8 4 KB 17.08.1999 16:10:34 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMiemigrat.dll 6.0.2436.1 12 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMiesetup.dll 6.0.2800.1106 57 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMiexplore.exe File not present Not Available Not Available Not Availableimagehlp.dll 5.0.2178.1 140 KB 08.06.2000 17:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMinseng.dll 6.0.2800.1607 68 KB 10.12.2007 12:38:54 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMjobexec.dll 5.0.0.1 60 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMjscript.dll 5.6.0.8831 455 KB 17.05.2006 11:43:58 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMjsproxy.dll 6.0.2800.1607 12 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:14 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMmshtml.dll 6.0.2800.1607 2642 KB 10.12.2007 12:38:46 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMmsjava.dll File not present Not Available Not Available Not Availablemsoss.dll 5.131.1877.3 148 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMmsxml.dll 8.0.6730.0 484 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMoccache.dll 6.0.2800.1106 86 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMole32.dll 4.71.3328.0 760 KB 29.03.1999 12:36:12 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMoleaut32.dll 2.40.4519.0 612 KB 31.07.2006 11:12:46 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMolepro32.dll 5.0.5014.0 104 KB 31.03.2003 15:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrsabase.dll 5.0.1877.7 99 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrsaenh.dll 5.0.1877.8 98 KB 17.08.1999 13:14:36 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrasapi32.dll 4.10.0.2222 212 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrsasig.dll 5.0.1877.7 4 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMschannel.dll 4.87.1959.1877 121 KB 23.09.1999 12:04:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshdoc401.dll 5.50.4914.1400 481 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshdocvw.dll 6.0.2800.1916 1309 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:10 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshell32.dll 4.72.3612.1700 1368 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshlwapi.dll 6.0.2800.1916 394 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:02 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMurl.dll 6.0.2800.1106 104 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMurlmon.dll 6.0.2800.1607 452 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:14 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMvbscript.dll 5.6.0.8825 428 KB 09.08.2004 21:27:06 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwebcheck.dll 6.0.2800.1106 252 KB 17.09.2006 04:04:04 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwin.com Not Available 24 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS Not Availablewininet.dll 6.0.2800.1607 562 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:18 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwinsock.dll 4.10.0.1998 21 KB 17.09.2006 01:09:54 C:\WINDOWSwintrust.dll 5.131.1877.5 46 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwsock.vxd 4.10.0.1998 15 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwsock32.dll 4.10.0.1998 40 KB 17.09.2006 01:09:54 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwsock32n.dll File not present Not Available Not Available Not Available Edited April 9, 2009 by Drugwash
Ryton Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 Hi Herbalist, thanks for your list! When the crashes occur, it apprears to be independent of resources (At the moment, with IE and OE running, resources are 73/75/73). I routinely delete the dat files with CCleaner. Certain sites are a possibility, although it would be random, but I have not yet made any connection (I do not revisit the same sites that often). I typically only have IE/OE plus required startup programs running when I'm surfing (Startup: Avast AV, Sygate Firewall, Microsoft USB Mouse Driver). I used Spyware Doctor for some time but had to remove it for stability reasons. Now I use Spyware Terminator and Spybot for weekly scans. The problem occurred with SD and continues today.With regards to my IE file list, mshtml.dll should read ver. 1555. I tried the 1106 version for a couple of days and thought the problem was resolved but it turned out to be only wishful thinking. I also just noticed that I had two copies of the same version of iexplore.exe with different time stamps (???). I deleted the one that differed from your setup and we'll see if it helps. I would really like to test your mshtml.dll version 1528 (Appears like you didn't apply Update 916281). Could you provide it? Thanks again!I haven't had any problems like that, but I rarely use Internet Explorer. Do these crashes happen after IE6 has been in use for a long time? IE6 has a way of depleting resources when it's used for a long period of time. When IE6 is running, what does the Resource Meter (C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools) show is available? Are the index.dat files getting large? There's a few differences but most of the IE file versions on my system are the same. advapi32.dll 4.80.0.1675 64 KB 5/11/98 8:01:00 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM advpack.dll 6.0.2800.1106 89 KB 8/29/02 7:14:40 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM browselc.dll 6.0.2800.1106 62 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM browseui.dll 6.0.2800.1692 994 KB 6/17/05 11:16:18 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM ckcnv.exe 6.0.2800.1106 8 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM comctl32.dll 5.81.4916.400 536 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM crypt32.dll 5.131.1878.12 364 KB 9/12/02 3:10:16 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM enhsig.dll 5.0.1877.8 4 KB 8/13/05 1:45:46 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM iemigrat.dll 6.0.2436.1 12 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM iesetup.dll 6.0.2800.1106 57 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM iexplore.exe 6.0.2800.1106 89 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer imagehlp.dll 4.0.1381.4 112 KB 5/11/98 8:01:00 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM inseng.dll 6.0.2800.1469 68 KB 8/26/04 9:53:48 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM jobexec.dll 5.0.0.1 47 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM jscript.dll 5.7.0.16535 480 KB 7/31/07 8:45:24 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM jsproxy.dll 6.0.2800.1106 12 KB 8/13/05 1:46:36 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM mshtml.dll 6.0.2800.1528 2637 KB 11/22/05 4:49:10 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM msjava.dll 5.0.3810.0 925 KB 2/28/03 6:26:26 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM msoss.dll 5.131.1877.3 136 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM msxml.dll 8.0.6730.0 484 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM occache.dll 6.0.2800.1106 86 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM ole32.dll 4.71.1719.0 768 KB 5/11/98 8:01:00 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM oleaut32.dll 2.40.4518.0 908 KB 8/13/05 1:47:18 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM olepro32.dll 5.0.4518.0 224 KB 8/13/05 1:47:18 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rsabase.dll 5.0.1877.7 99 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rsaenh.dll 5.0.1877.8 98 KB 8/13/05 1:45:46 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rasapi32.dll 4.10.0.2002 196 KB 7/7/99 10:14:54 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rsasig.dll 5.0.1877.7 4 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM schannel.dll 4.87.1964.1878 110 KB 9/26/02 12:38:44 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shdoc401.dll 5.50.4914.1400 481 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shdocvw.dll 6.0.2800.1762 1308 KB 10/21/05 3:17:22 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shell32.dll 4.72.3812.634 1364 KB 1/8/07 6:34:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shlwapi.dll 6.0.2800.1740 400 KB 8/31/05 5:49:30 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM url.dll 6.0.2800.1106 104 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM urlmon.dll 6.0.2800.1525 449 KB 10/21/05 12:51:26 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM vbscript.dll 5.7.0.16535 404 KB 7/31/07 8:45:24 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM webcheck.dll 6.0.2800.1106 252 KB 8/13/05 1:46:32 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM win.com Not Available 24 KB 5/11/98 8:01:00 PM C:\WINDOWS Not Availablewininet.dll 6.0.2800.1525 562 KB 10/21/05 12:51:36 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM winsock.dll 4.10.0.1998 21 KB 9/2/98 1:10:52 PM C:\WINDOWS wintrust.dll 5.131.1877.5 46 KB 8/29/02 12:00:00 AM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM wsock.vxd 4.10.0.1998 15 KB 5/11/98 8:01:00 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM wsock32.dll 4.10.0.1998 40 KB 9/2/98 1:10:52 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM wsock32n.dll 5.2.0.2 26 KB 5/11/98 8:01:00 PM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Ryton Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 Hi Drugwash, thanks for your list, unfortunately, its for SE not FE.For the sake of it, here's my list.<removed win.com remarks; it's just certain info unavailable, not the file itself>iexplore.exe is indeed not present because it's been renamed due to the bad habit of certain applications - not to mention malware, although I got none present - to directly call iexplore.exe instead of the default browser (SlimBrowser)msjava.dll is missing because I've uninstalled MS Java Virtual Machine.Dunno why wsock32n.dll is missing - probably it's not needed in my configuration.IE-related crashes are extremely rare on my system and usually happen due to other applications running prior to or simultaneously with the browser.advapi32.dll 4.90.0.3000 64 KB 08.06.2000 17:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMadvpack.dll 6.0.2900.2172 98 KB 01.08.2004 17:01:04 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMbrowselc.dll 6.0.2800.1106 62 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMbrowseui.dll 6.0.2800.1916 995 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:16 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMckcnv.exe 6.0.2800.1106 8 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMcomctl32.dll 5.81.4916.400 536 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMcrypt32.dll 5.131.1877.5 363 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMenhsig.dll 5.0.1877.8 4 KB 17.08.1999 16:10:34 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMiemigrat.dll 6.0.2436.1 12 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMiesetup.dll 6.0.2800.1106 57 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMiexplore.exe File not present Not Available Not Available Not Availableimagehlp.dll 5.0.2178.1 140 KB 08.06.2000 17:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMinseng.dll 6.0.2800.1607 68 KB 10.12.2007 12:38:54 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMjobexec.dll 5.0.0.1 60 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMjscript.dll 5.6.0.8831 455 KB 17.05.2006 11:43:58 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMjsproxy.dll 6.0.2800.1607 12 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:14 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMmshtml.dll 6.0.2800.1607 2642 KB 10.12.2007 12:38:46 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMmsjava.dll File not present Not Available Not Available Not Availablemsoss.dll 5.131.1877.3 148 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMmsxml.dll 8.0.6730.0 484 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMoccache.dll 6.0.2800.1106 86 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMole32.dll 4.71.3328.0 760 KB 29.03.1999 12:36:12 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMoleaut32.dll 2.40.4519.0 612 KB 31.07.2006 11:12:46 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMolepro32.dll 5.0.5014.0 104 KB 31.03.2003 15:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrsabase.dll 5.0.1877.7 99 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrsaenh.dll 5.0.1877.8 98 KB 17.08.1999 13:14:36 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrasapi32.dll 4.10.0.2222 212 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMrsasig.dll 5.0.1877.7 4 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMschannel.dll 4.87.1959.1877 121 KB 23.09.1999 12:04:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshdoc401.dll 5.50.4914.1400 481 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshdocvw.dll 6.0.2800.1916 1309 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:10 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshell32.dll 4.72.3612.1700 1368 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMshlwapi.dll 6.0.2800.1916 394 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:02 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMurl.dll 6.0.2800.1106 104 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMurlmon.dll 6.0.2800.1607 452 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:14 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMvbscript.dll 5.6.0.8825 428 KB 09.08.2004 21:27:06 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwebcheck.dll 6.0.2800.1106 252 KB 17.09.2006 04:04:04 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwin.com Not Available 24 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS Not Availablewininet.dll 6.0.2800.1607 562 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:18 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwinsock.dll 4.10.0.1998 21 KB 17.09.2006 01:09:54 C:\WINDOWSwintrust.dll 5.131.1877.5 46 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwsock.vxd 4.10.0.1998 15 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwsock32.dll 4.10.0.1998 40 KB 17.09.2006 01:09:54 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEMwsock32n.dll File not present Not Available Not Available Not Available
Drugwash Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Ah, apologies for the confusion - I completely overlooked the FE specification.
submix8c Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 (edited) IE6SP1 is not OS-dependent (re WinFE vs WinSE) except that it will not run on older OS (eg Win95, NT4, others).Bear in mind IE6SP1 is an upgrade to the IE of the installed OS (whatever version), so this problem may or may not be related to IE, or even the OS, or it could even be both.To confirm the IE6SP1, list the contents of the downloaded package (is that what the list is?). Some updates to the OS may relate to the IE. FWIW, you may even try to get the latest IE6 package (complete) and try re-installing.The other guys know what they're doing/saying, so I'm outta here!edit - Drugwash, is my above stmt re OS-dependency incorrect? A complete reinstall worth a shot? Edited April 9, 2009 by submix8c
Drugwash Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I'm not entirely sure about OS dependency. AFAICS, the SysInfo tool lists certain non-IE files (such as win.com, for example), so there may be an interdependency there somewhere. However, I don't see any 98FE / 98SE separation within the IE-SP1 cabs; there's only ME/NT/2k separation, so it may be safe to assume that the same files would be installed for both 98FE and 98SE. Other than that, the installed hotfixes could also make a difference.Regardless, the interaction between IE files and OS-specific files may have different outcome.
Ryton Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 Ah, apologies for the confusion - I completely overlooked the FE specification. Hi Drugwash, we're all human... As my problem is an exception between "iexplore.exe ver. 1106 and mshtml.dll ver. 1555" on a fully updated Win98 FE box, I did find it interesting that your SE mshtml.dll was at ver. 1607. OS dependent or other?
herbalist Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Has this problem always been there or is it fairly recent? If the problem isn't a version conflict or resource related, I'd also suspect an interaction with something else that's running. Avast would be the first item I'd check. With the few that still work, 9X support is pretty much an afterthought. It's entirely possible that an AV update could be part of the problem. It's been years since I've run an AV and only tried Avast once, many years back. It didn't work well on my system.I also just noticed that I had two copies of the same version of iexplore.exe with different time stamps (???). I deleted the one that differed from your setup and we'll see if it helps. I would really like to test your mshtml.dll version 1528 (Appears like you didn't apply Update 916281). Could you provide it? Thanks again!Where were these iexplore copies at? Were they renamed or the file extensions changed? It's also possible that IE might have been compromised by something. The best way to check if a file has been altered is to compare the checksums of the files. On mine, the MD5 for IExplore.exe is eb9eaf627f705525d01de5fa07ea1818. Rick
Ryton Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 Hi Rick, thanks for everything thus far! I'm guessing but it started about 2 mths ago. I've used Avast for a number of years now and cannot relate this problem to an update, however, it's possible as the problem's frequency can be very low. I can go for days or just hours without an issue making troubleshooting difficult. With regards to the iexplore.exe files, one was identical to yours while the other was in the system directory looking identical except for its time stamp. Like you I thought it could have been malware so I deleted it and also extracted a new copy in the IE directory. Since then, I've been crash free but it could take more than a week to know for sure. Here's hoping...Has this problem always been there or is it fairly recent? If the problem isn't a version conflict or resource related, I'd also suspect an interaction with something else that's running. Avast would be the first item I'd check. With the few that still work, 9X support is pretty much an afterthought. It's entirely possible that an AV update could be part of the problem. Drugwash Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 [...] I did find it interesting that your SE mshtml.dll was at ver. 1607. OS dependent or other?Honestly, I don't know. So many updates, hotfixes and whatnot on my system and I got a bad memory. You can however check MDGx's page, see which package(s) contain that file and then try to find that particular version by extracting the file from the package(s) and checking version. It's also possible that certain web pages contain incompatible code. Some have been updated to follow IE8 and may cause trouble in IE6. I've had consistent crashes on a certain site no earlier than yesterday, with SlimBrowser (my default IE-based browser), something new to me.
submix8c Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 FWIW, agreeing with Drugwash on the "incompatible web pages". I have noticed the same thing. Not sure why (finally coming into compliance?). Firefox seems to be ok (always tried to be compliant?).Since older Windows are being "dropped", the IE6 might continue to work, but try to find an alternative browser that still supports the older OS'...
