footer Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 I just bought a new xp machine, (sp3), and made an restricted account to be used in most daily situations. What is odd that I can't access any drives expect "my documents". I have to change rights for every current / upcoming drives with admin user, which is quite annoying. I think there was not this kind restriction in my earlier pc, it was sp3 too. I think only "progam files" and others' user folders were locked. Is this normal behaviour? Can it be defaulted to something else? And hopefully this question is seen not million times here, as I didn't find helping posts at least with a quick search.
weEvil Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 If you don't like restrictions, don't use a restricted account.Change it. Go to the Control Panel, Users, then change it to limited or power user or something.
footer Posted December 16, 2008 Author Posted December 16, 2008 So if understanding right, this IS normal for limited accounts in default installation? In my earlier pc I was almost always logged in as admin, but I don't remember seeing this kind behaviour when using limited account.
jaclaz Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 You may want to check your policies/ACL and Registry/Group PoliciesSome tools/hints:http://www.theeldergeek.com/group_policy_editor.htmhttp://www.gpoguy.com/Free-Group-Policy-Tools.aspxhttp://www.bpsoftware.com/products/BPACLer/http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897332.aspxhttp://www.411-registry-repair.com/block-u...-certain-drivesTools that you may use from your limited account to access something otherwise denied:http://www.ss64.com/nt/runas.htmlhttp://www.steelsonic.com/steelrunas.htmhttp://www.commandline.co.uk/sanur/jaclaz

footer Posted December 16, 2008 Author Posted December 16, 2008 Thanks both. I can use admin or power user accounts. But is this drive locking normal or not?
weEvil Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Thanks both. I can use admin or power user accounts. But is this drive locking normal or not?Sounds normal for a restricted account. If it does it in power user or admin account then it is an issue.
