cdavid Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I have just bought a new laptop that has a wireless NIC, as I plan to use it whenI'm not sitting at my computer desk. I would like to add it to my network so that Ican access my other computers from it to share files, as well as to connect tothe internet. Right now, my other 3 computers, which are all in the same room, are connected through a hub and then a router (all by cable). The router that I'mcurrently using only has 2 ports, one for cable in and one for cable out.The setup I am using is:-> modem -> wired router -> hub -> computer1, computer2, etc.If I replaced my router with a wireless one and connected all of my computers to theports on it (whether with cable or wireless), would I still be able to share files betweenthem, or would they only have a shared internet connection? If not, how would I go about doing it?
PC_LOAD_LETTER Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 in your configuration, if you replaced either the wired router or the hub (or both) with a wireless router, you would get the same functionality as you currently have. a wireless router is just a router that also has wireless. it shouldnt change your setup.
cdavid Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) What is a wireless access point? I was just looking at some new routers ona site and it mentioned it. It was connected to a port on a hub.Is it something that may be cheaper than buying a new wireless router? Edited November 24, 2008 by cdavid
tain Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 A wireless access point provides wireless access to a wired network. A WAP likely has fewer features like ports and configuration options than a router. Prices are pretty comparable and affordable.
