Hi, I recently bought a Dell Vostro 1510. It came with Vista, everything was working fine, however, I didn't really want Vista. So I installed a copy of XP and everything was fine, I could get drivers for everything, mostly of the disc that came with it or on the site.

The sound, it seems though, isn't working, I've tried various drivers but the sound card (or integrated sound) always comes under PCI Device.

Can anyone please help? It's really starting to annoy me.

Thanks, Mr 047

What is the HWID (hardware id) for the missing Device Driver?

Open Device Manager

expand Sound, video and game controllers

right-click open Properties

go-to the Details tab.

Basically tell us what model sound chip the system uses...

example:

I went into the device manager and looked under that option. But all that was there was codec information*. I did however look under the PCI Device and the id was:

-"PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_284B&SUBSYS_02731028&REV_03\3&B1BFB68&0&D8"

I don't know if this will be helpful at all. If there is any other info that I could give that might help then please ask and I'll try my hardest.

*Audio Codecs

*Legacy Audio Codecs

*Legacy Video capture devices

*Media controll Devices

*Video Codecs

Have you tried Windows update, sometimes they have one? If you can workout exactly what chip is used then you could try directly at the manufacturers website (eg Realtek?) and see if that works. Some drivers have to be hacked to get them to install on laptops (generally laptops are licenced to only use manufacturer supplied drivers for some reason). I am unclear on the legalities on doing this though so you're on your own if you go down that path.

[edit]Have you tried contacting Dell? I had a mate with a similar issue with an Acer (I think?) laptop with no XP drivers available on their website. They directed him to the XP drivers of a different laptop that worked fine. Could be worth a shot?

VEN_8086&DEV_284B

VEN8086 is always Intel. DEV_284B is the unknown, but seems to be an HD Audio chip.

What version of XP Pro x86 are you using, SP0, SP1, SP2, or SP3?

If not the last (SP3) you might need the HD Audio update from MS before you can install drivers for your audio controller:

In fact Dell does provide XP compatible Audio drivers for that laptop

BTW here is the main Dell Support link for your laptop:
