My notebook boot ok in USB port.

And I am trying to install the origial WindowsXP in a Pen-drive 8GB.

I format in both FAT32 and NTSC but he does not continue the installation. By installing the CD with the windowsXP, acknowledge and partition the pen-drive, but does not continue ..

Why is that? and how to solve?

Pen drive needs to be formatted FAT16 (FAT), which is a problem considering that's not possible with drive over 4gb. Today I installed windows by putting the setup files onto a folder on the HD using a 8gb stick. Then I FAT16 formatted and made bootable a 128mb pen drive and run the setup from the HD. I specified the source and temp dir to use (winnt.exe /S:c:\winxp /T:c:\temp).

The trick is after files are copied to temp dir and you are prompted to reboot, you want to get back to into dos as you need to edit the boot.ini placed on your HD. Dos tools attrib and edit will be needed.

attrib -r -a -s -h boot.ini <press enter>

edit boot.ini <press enter>

Change all references of:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)

to default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

attrib +r +a +s +h boot.ini <press enter>

Then reboot without pen drive in.

Hope this helps.

@vivian

Are you trying to install and run "full" XP on a USB stick?

Or, as lost101 is saying you want to install XP from a USB stick?

If the first one check this:

http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=14181

(and tutorials linked to in Dietmar's signature)

OFFLINE right now :(

this:

http://forums.ngine.de/viewforum.php?f=4

http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176

http://forums.ngine.de/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1243

but, first thing try this:

http://www.usboot.org/tiki-index.php

If the second one, check this:

http://www.msfn.org/board/Install-XP-from-USB-f157.html

@lost101

Just for the record, the limit of FAT16 is around 2 Gb (NOT 4 Gb), and there is no problem with FAT32 formatted sticks, if you fdisk/format them properly.

Edit: I missed the point of the topic, thought it was about installing from USB, sorry.

Anyway here is the method for installing from USB:

You can do a WinNT32 install from a USB stick that boots into WinPE 2.

Copy your i386 or AMD64 folder to the usb stick. Also copy unattend files to the USB.

Boot from the USB, use Diskpart to fix drive letters, and to format the install drive.

Assuming the USB is drive D:, and you want to install on drive C:, execute a command like:

D:\i386\winnt32 /MakeLocalSource /noreboot /s:D:\i386 /syspart:C /tempdrive:C /udf:MyComputer,D:\Unattend.udb /unattend:D:\Unattend.txt

I tried it, spent 30' on it, works like a charm.

@BikinDutchman

Re-read vivian's post, he/she wants to run a full XP, not install one to internal drive.

Oops, stupid me :blushing: .

I did not even realize that booting the OS from USB was already that well developed.

I followed Dietmar's attempts but lost track.
