nabilalk
Hello,Ever since I upgraded to SP3 (Dell Dimension 4600, 2 GB DDR SDRAM, 2.4 GHZ P4), svchost.exe is maxing out the CPU at startup. I can go into taskmanager.exe and manually end the offending process, however this is quite irritating and should not be happening. Any idea on how to fix this? Thanks! Here is a HJT log after cleaning the computer with AVG Antispyware:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 4:26:02 AM, on 5/16/2008Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16640)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Nhksrv.exeC:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exeC:\Program Files\eBoostr\EBstrSvc.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\RaMaint.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeIn.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXEC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32krn.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\tlntsvr.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\vssvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Netropa\Multimedia Keyboard\MMKeybd.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\taskswitch.exeC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32kui.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Gmail Notifier\gnotify.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exeC:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\pg2.exeC:\Program Files\Siber Systems\AI RoboForm\RoboTaskBarIcon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\Program Files\Netropa\Multimedia Keyboard\mmusbkb2.exeC:\Program Files\eBoostr\eBoostrCP.exeC:\Program Files\allSnap\allSnap.exeC:\Program Files\Netropa\OSD.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ONENOTEM.EXEC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 5\firefox.exeC:\Program Files\Picasa2\Picasa2.exeC:\Program Files\hfs\hfs.exeC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR1 - Yzöwl
I would suggest you prevent C:\Setup.exe from running at startup. It is shown in your log underO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyVBApp] C:\Setup.exeDo a web search on it, you may like I suspect, find out that it is malware!I'm also moving this topic to the Malware Forum where these files are better placed. nabilalk
Thanks for the reply. I have disabled Setup.exe as you have suggested (I used msconfig, please let me know if there is a better way to do this). However, I dont think that is the problem, because even with Setup.exe running, the computer seems to be working fine. It is just that the CPU maxes to nearly 100% at startup and svchost.exe seems to be between 95-98% of the CPU. Do you think that the Setup.exe is the issue? Thanks!-NKAPS: Here is a fresh HJT log:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 5:13:26 AM, on 5/16/2008Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16640)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Nhksrv.exeC:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exeC:\Program Files\eBoostr\EBstrSvc.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\RaMaint.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeIn.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXEC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32krn.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\tlntsvr.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\vssvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Netropa\Multimedia Keyboard\MMKeybd.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\taskswitch.exeC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32kui.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Gmail Notifier\gnotify.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exeC:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\pg2.exeC:\Program Files\Siber Systems\AI RoboForm\RoboTaskBarIcon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\Program Files\Netropa\Multimedia Keyboard\mmusbkb2.exeC:\Program Files\eBoostr\eBoostrCP.exeC:\Program Files\allSnap\allSnap.exeC:\Program Files\Netropa\OSD.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ONENOTEM.EXEC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\hfs\hfs.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 5\firefox.exeC:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exeC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR1 - nabilalk
My apologies on the quote/code tagss. As per your suggestion I looked at the results for MyVBApp, and deleted all relevant entries from the registry. Hopefully that will alleviate the problem. Although, I don't understand why svchost.exe would be affected by MyVBApp's setup.exe running at startup? Why wouldn't the setup.exe be showing in the Taskmanager as maxing the CPU? Maybe it is so that the malware can be better hidden? Thanks for your help.-NKA Edited May 16, 2008 by nabilalk
Yzöwl
Well the easiest way to explain it is that svchost.exe is a generic host process, it is like a container for many other processes to work under. Many processes use this and malware is just one possibile process to take advantage of this host.If you use XP Pro then try OK'ing the following in a 'Start => Run box'.%comspec% /k tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe"The resultant list will tell you the names of the services using the host under their pertinent process Ids. It is therefore possible to look up in a search engine any processes in the list to find out if it is suspect, and also close down the particular instance of svchost if required. nabilalk
Thanks, I believe that this issue is now resolved. I will investigate what is attached to svchost.exe using the code that you provided. Thanks so much for your help, this CPU issue was driving me nuts. Next time I have a problem, I will come here first, and same myself a lot of headache.-NKA
nabilalk
Well, I thought that the problem was fixed, but after restarting XP again, the problem has come back! Svchost.exe is maxing out the CPU after I login to windows. In addition, my taskbar seems to be switching themes from Royal Noir to XP Classic after I manually terminate svchost.exe from the Task Manager. Here is a fresh HJT log:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 2:44:23 PM, on 5/17/2008Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16640)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\Nhksrv.exeC:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exeC:\Program Files\eBoostr\EBstrSvc.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\RaMaint.exeC:\Program Files\Netropa\Multimedia Keyboard\MMKeybd.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\taskswitch.exeC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32kui.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeIn.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Gmail Notifier\gnotify.exeC:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exeC:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\pg2.exeC:\Program Files\Siber Systems\AI RoboForm\RoboTaskBarIcon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXEC:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exeC:\Program Files\Eset\nod32krn.exeC:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exeC:\Program Files\Netropa\Multimedia Keyboard\mmusbkb2.exeC:\Program Files\eBoostr\eBoostrCP.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exeC:\Program Files\allSnap\allSnap.exeC:\Program Files\Netropa\OSD.exeC:\Program Files\hfs\hfs.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\tlntsvr.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ONENOTEM.EXEC:\WINDOWS\System32\vssvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 5\firefox.exeC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR1 - cluberti
Svchost.exe is just a container process for things to run in, and as you have already noticed you have quite a few of these running. I would strongly suggest Process Explorer to take a look at what is running inside the offending svchost, because there can be any number of things causing this. Svchost.exe is used by a lot of malware (because you have quite a few that are normally listed and running critical services, so it makes it easier to hide inside a svchost because you already expect to see that in a process list). Process Explorer will show you what's running inside of it if you hover over the item in the process list, and also show you what inside of it is consuming CPU. Knowing you have a C:\Setup.exe on the box, I'm quite suspicious of what's going on in there.

I have also used AVG Antivirus and checked for malware and nothing has come up. In addition I have already used Process Explorer as well, but how do I know what is malware or not by hovering over the processes? Thanks!-NKA
nabilalk
*Update: Also, using Process Explorer I investigated the offending svchost.exe process and manually terminated services running under it, until I noticed a reduction in CPU. Once I disabled Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), the CPU usage of the svchost.exe that was consuming 98% CPU, dropped almost to zero. I then disabled the startup of BITS from services.msc, and restarted. Upon startup, to my surprise, BITS had been enabled despite the fact that I disabled it. However, svchost.exe no longer behaved like it did before.So...so far, everything is working fine. I'm getting fed up though with this back-and-forth and if the problem keeps up, I will have to reformat. Thanks for your help, I have disabled the services that you suggested using msconfig and services.msc, and set them to manual, although a lot of them were already set to "manual".Thanks,NKA
