Jimbo80 Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I had a virus on my PC which a friend of mine got rid of.But my computer is going a bit barmy since and I think he's corrputed the javascript or maybe even deleted it (when I go to Start>Run>regsvr32 jscript.dll it comes up as failed). The search assistant and system restore don't work at all, they just come up as completely blank.Windows Media Player won't load, not even when I click on a video or song and ask to play it in WMP.Online I can't log into certain websites, anything or any link that requires javascript won't work (such as youtube, it says javascript is turned off but it's enabled in Internet Options)... all these things were working fine even when I had the virus.I've run scans and it's not showing any viruses, so I don't think it's to do with another virus.I have Windows XP. I have Avast Anti Virus, SUPERAntiSpyware and SpywareBlaster installed.Has anyone got any ideas on how to rectify this, it would be very much appreciated.THANKS

I would go into add/remove programs and remove the windows script host 5.7 (if you can), and then re-download the package and reinstall.
Jimbo80 Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 Hi cluberti, thanks for the reply.Windows Script isn't listed in the Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.I tried reinstalling it from the Microsoft website and although a box came up INSTALLED, an error box also came up saying error registering the ocx c:\windows\system32\jscript.dllJim

After that, regardless of whether or not the commands worked, try dial-a-fix again.

I know it is drastic, but fixing the problem the virus caused will take you longer (and again, without the 100% certainty you're actually clean) than it will to back up your data and start fresh.
Jimbo80 Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 Hi cluberti,My PC came with Windows XP already loaded so I don't have a disc to completely reinstall everything (although I do have a Dell Reinstallation disc.)If I did have a disc I would be reluctant to completely start again as last time I was advised to do this (about 8 years ago) it completely mucked the PC up and I spent almost as much money trying to fix it than it would have cost to buy a new PC.I tried reinstalling jscript and internet explorer but either has made any difference.Jim
gunsmokingman Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Since you have tried the suggestions and they did not work.1:\ You could try a install from windows and do a update type of install 2:\ Do a full format and a reinstall the whole OS.
Mijzelf Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I tried reinstalling it from the Microsoft website and although a box came up INSTALLED, an error box also came up saying error registering the ocx c:\windows\system32\jscript.dllDid you rename or remove the damaged jscript.dll before? The installer will not replace it if it can read the version number, and the versionnumber is not older than the version the installer contains.
Tarun Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Have you tried using the SFC Purge and SFC Scan in Dial-a-fix Tools (hammer icon) section?
